Live Commentary

  • My name is Ben Cullimore and it's been a pleasure describing the action to you this afternoon. Have a great rest of the weekend!
  • Hull remain on 37 points and are mathematically still in danger of being relegated, and they now face tough clashes against Manchester United and Everton in their final two games of the season. However, if 18th-place Norwich City fail to beat Chelsea tomorrow, their safety will be confirmed.
  • Aston Villa deservedly win all three points and, as a result of hitting the much sought-after 38-point mark, are guaranteed Premier League football for another season. Weimann was their hero, netting twice and playing a crucial role in the final third of the pitch, whilst Bowery had a great game after Agbonlahor's injury midway through the first half meant that he had to come on for only his seventh appearance of the season.
  • FT: ASTON VILLA 3-1 HULL CITY
  • 90' + 2'
Hull try to embark on one last attacking movement, but the Aston Villa defence sit deep and refuse to allow them a way through.
  • 90'
There will be three minutes of added time.
  • 90'
Westwood gives away a free kick to Hull 30 yards out on the right flank, which Huddlestone sends right over the heads of all of the players in the penalty area and out for a goalkick.
  • 88'
Hull players are dropping like flies in the final moments of the game. Now Livermore is lying on the floor, but it looks as if he's only suffering from cramp and nothing too serious.
  • 87'
Baker and Long clash off the ball on the edge of the Aston Villa penalty area, leaving the Irishman limping and clutching his leg.
  • 85'
Hull continue to press, and El Mohamady forces Lowton into clearing the ball out for a corner. It's whipped in towards Bruce, who heads the ball into Bowery and out for another corner. The next one is headed out to El Mohamady on the wing, who composes himself before setting up Bruce once again, but his final headed effort is poor and it fails to trouble Guzan.
  • 83'
Livermore slides in late on Westwood, taking out the Aston Villa player from behind and giving away a free kick. It's launched forward but Bacuna is unable to control it, instead heading the ball out for a Hull goalkick.
  • 81'
    Substitution Andreas Weimann Leandro Bacuna
  • 81'
Weimann receives a standing ovation as he makes his way off the pitch to be replaced by Bacuna. The Austrian has arguably been Aston Villa's best player today, and his impressive performance could well have guaranteed his side another season of Premier League football.
  • 80'
Bowery, who is the only Aston Villa player positioned in the Hull half of the pitch, receives the ball and has to push forward by himself. He tries a few step-overs before unleashing a long-range shot, but it's poor and flies well wide.
  • 78'
Aston Villa continue to sit deep and frustrate the Hull forwards, who remain unable to find a way through.
  • 76'
Substitution Marc Albrighton Karim El Ahmadi
  • 76'
Albrighton, who has got a slight groin strain, makes his way off the pitch to be replaced by El Ahmadi.
  • 76'
Huddlestone finds himself with the ball at his feet just outside the Aston Villa penalty area and he decides to shoot, but Guzan is able to dive low and save comfortably.
  • 75'
Much to the relief of Paul Lambert and the Aston Villa fans, Weimann is back on his feet and seems to have recovered.
  • 74'
Paul Lambert looks worried as Weimann lies hurt on the floor. He's been absolutely fantastic today, and it would be such a shame if he was to leave the pitch injured.
  • 72'
Things have calmed down somewhat, as Aston Villa seem content to push further back and defend their two-goal lead. Their defence hold their positions and frustrate Hull, forcing Figueroa into attempting a shot from 40 yards out that clears the goal by quite some distance.
  • 70'
    Substitution Nikica Jelavic Y. Sagbo
  • 70'
Hull are in desperate need of a greater attacking threat up front if they are going to have any chance of making a comeback, so Steve Bruce has decided to replace the relatively ineffective Jelavic with Sagbo, who is desperately searching for only his third Premier League goal since joining from French club Evian last summer.
  • 68'
Delph rushes down the right wing before crossing in towards Bowery, who, despite being outnumbered three-to-one, makes a nuisance of himself and almost makes contact with the ball.
  • 66'
Both goalkeepers seem to be in the mood to rush out to the edge of their penalty areas, as, just moments after Guzan does so at one end, Harper does it at the other to dispossess Weimann. The veteran goalkeeper decides to go in with his feet, however, cutting out the danger at the last moment.
  • 64'
Huddlestone sends a fantastic long ball forward that flies over the top of the Aston Villa back line and into the path of Long, but Guzan rushes out and just about manages to collect the ball before the Irishman can make contact with it.
  • 62'
A Hull attack breaks down and Weimann and Bowery break away on a counter attack for Aston Villa. The Austrian lays the ball off for the substitute and he weaves in and out of the Hull defence on the edge of the penalty area before unleashing a shot that Harper has to tip over the crossbar with his finger tips.
  • 60'
After being on the back foot for the majority of the second half so far, Hull are finally gifted an opportunity to pull a goal back after a miskick by Clark, but both Jelavic and El Mohamady scuff their shots.
  • 58'
Aston Villa win a corner, which Albrighton sends into the heart of the Hull penalty area. Harper does just about enough to punch the ball away and out to the edge of the penalty area, where Albrighton picks it up once again and, with plenty of space around him, decides to unleash an ambitious shot on goal, but it flies well wide of the goal.
  • 56'
Aston Villa continue to push and pressurise the Hull defence, and the visitors continue to find it difficult to deal with a side that are so attack-minded, despite being two goals ahead with over half-an-hour left to play.
  • 54'
Another chance for Aston Villa! This time it's Bowery that beats Figueroa by twisting and turning around the Honduran before unleashing a low shot towards Harper, who dives down low to parry the ball away before pouncing on it.
  • 52'
Again, Weimann muscles his way past a Hull defender, this time Figueroa, but he decides to shoot from a tight angle and the effort fails to test Harper.
  • 50'
Weimann beats Bruce on the left flank and sends a long cross towards Albrighton near the back post. He tries to volley the ball into the centre of the penalty area but it fails to find an Aston Villa shirt, and Hull are able to clear the ball and regroup.
  • 49'
Weimann and Bertrand link up on the edge of the Hull penalty area as Aston Villa push forward looking for a fourth goal, but the on-loan Englishman is flagged for offside.
  • 47'
Early danger for Hull as Aston Villa are awarded a free kick on the left wing, but Albrighton's delivery is cut out and headed away up the pitch.
  • 46'
    Substitution David Meyler Stephen Quinn
  • 45'
    And we're off again!
  • Just one change has been made at half time and it's for Hull: Meyler has been replaced by Quinn.
  • The two teams are making their way back onto the pitch ahead of a vitally important second half. Aston Villa are just 45 minutes away from guaranteed Premier League safty, whilst Hull face the extremely difficult task of attempting to pull off a comeback against a strong and determined side that are full of confidence.
  • Aston Villa have easily been the better of the two sides at Villa Park this afternoon, and, as a result, they deservedly lead 3-1 at the half time break. Their dominance seems to have much to do with the timing of their opening goal, as falling behind after only 55 seconds had a damaging effect on Hull's confidence. From then onwards, bar a few periods of impressive attacking play, the visitors were always on the back foot, and they have continued to find it difficult to deal with the pace and power of Weimann, particularly down the right flank.
  • 45' + 3'
    Assist Jordan Nathaniel Bowery
  • 45' + 3'
    Goal Andreas Weimann
GOAL! Hull fail to put enough pressure on Bowery and the substitute whips in a wonderful cross towards Weimann, who rises high and nods in a fantastic headed effort past Harper. 3-1!
  • 45' + 2'
There's confusion between Davies and Harper, and the former ends up making a scruffy half-volleyed clearance that goes out for a Aston Villa corner.
  • 45' + 1'
Aston Villa are back on the front foot, as Hull look deflated, despite still having over half of the game left to play. Weimann and Figueroa fight for the ball near the corner flag, but the Honduran wins the battle and is able to shepherd the ball out for a goalkick.
  • 45'
There will be three minutes of added time.
  • 43'
    Substitution James Chester Alex Bruce
  • 43'
Things go from bad to worse for Hull, as Chester is forced off with a nasty injury. His replacement is Bruce, a former Birmingham City player, and, as expected, the home crowd greet his introduction with a chorus of boos.
  • 41'
    Goal Andreas Weimann
GOAL! Aston Villa keep the pressure exerted on the Hull defence and are rewarded with a second goal. A corner finds Baker in the middle of the box and his towering header is cleared off the line by Jelavic, before his follow-up effort hits the crossbar. The Hull defence are all over the place and fail to clear the ball, allowing Weimann to head the ball over the line from point-blank range. 2-1!
  • 40'
Great play by Aston Villa! Weimann muscles his way past three Hull defenders before sprinting into the box and forcing Harper into pulling off a good save. The ball then finds its way out to Delph, who sends the ball back into the box, where Bowery sends a headed effort towards Harper, forcing the veteran goalkeeper to tip the ball over the crossbar.
  • 38'
Baker is forced into sending a bouncing pass back to Guzan, which the goalkeeper scuffs and puts out for a Hull corner. Huddlestone whips the ball into centre of the penalty area where it finds the head of Meyler, but his effort goes well wide of the goal.
  • 36'
A long ball forward almost finds Long, but, again, Guzan rushes out to cut out the danger. The Aston Villa back four are looking extremely nervous at the moment!
  • 34'
Brilliant save by Guzan! Huddlestone finds himself in plenty of space 30 yards out so he decides to unleash a rocket of a shot on goal, but the American goalkeeper dives to his left and pulls off a spectacular stop.
  • 32'
Hull win another free kick, this time further out on the left wing, and Huddlestone again takes it. This time he decides to send a more orthodox long ball into the box, but Guzan rushes out and collects it with ease.
  • 30'
The atmosphere inside Villa Park has gone sour and the emphasis is now entirely with Hull, who have finally woken up after a slow start to the game.
  • 28'
    Own Goal Jordan Nathaniel Bowery
GOAL! Huddlestone decides to send the free kick out to the left hand side of the penalty area and Aston Villa are completely caught by surprise. Rosenior is unmarked and has plenty of time to set himself up before firing the ball towards goal, where it clips off Bowery before ending up in the bottom left-hand corner of the net. 1-1!
  • 27'
Vlaar dives into the back of Long and Hull are awarded a free kick in a dangerous position 25 yards away from goal.
  • 25'
Bowery makes an instant impact by flicking the ball onto Weimann down the right wing. He runs forward and beats Davies before trying to find Bowery, who has made a great run into the centre of the box, but the Austrian is crowded out and his pass is deflected out for a corner, which Hull are able to deal with.
  • 23'
Substitution Gabriel Agbonlahor Jordan Nathaniel Bowery
  • 23'
Disappointment for Aston Villa as they're forced into making an early substitution. Agbonhalor is still struggling with the injury to his left knee, so he is replaced by Bowery.
  • 21'
Hull win a corner and throw a plethora of bodies forward to attack it. The ball is cleared but only as far as Rosenior, and the follow-up cross almost finds Jelavic, but Mike Dean blows his whistle and awards a free kick to Aston Vila after spotting some pushing and shoving in front of goal.
  • 19'
Albrighton dispossesses Meyler and Aston Villa break away on a counter attack. Weimann darts forward with the ball before being taken down from behind by Huddlestone, and referee Mike Dean awards the hosts a free kick. The resulting set-piece is launched forward but it's too heavy and it clears every player in the box.
  • 17'
Every Aston Villa player bar Guzan is in the Hull half of the pitch as they push forward in search of a second goal. However, the visitors have plenty of bodies behind the ball and break down yet another promising attacking movement.
  • 15'
Again, Hull attack down the left flank, and, again, Figueroa and Meyler link up well. The latter finds Long, who fires a low cross into the box, but it's poor and fails to trouble the Aston Villa defence.
  • 13'
The resulting set-piece is fails to find an Aston Villa shirt and is cleared away and up towards the halfway line by Davies, before being sent all the way back to Guzan.
  • 12'
Aston Villa are knocking on the door again and causing Hull problems in the final third. Agbonlahor, who seems to have recovered from his earlier knock, manages to get a shot away from the edge of the box despite being under pressure, but his effort is deflected out for a corner.
  • 11'
Patient build-up play by Hull in the middle of the pitch, but Aston Villa are pressing and putting them under serious pressure, which the visitors are finding hard to deal with.
  • 9'
Figueroa and Meyler link up on the left flank before the Irishman tries to set up Livermore, who made a darting run into the Aston Villa penalty area, but his lofted ball forward is too heavy and it bounces out for a goalkick.
  • 7'
Hull look determined after falling a goal behind so quickly. They break down the right flank and attempt to work their way into the box, but Delph stands tall and wins his side a throw-in deep in their own half of the pitch.
  • 5'
After receiving treatment, Agbonlahor is back on his feet, much to the relief of Paul Lambert who looked particularly worried.
  • 3'
It's gone from joy to agony for Aston Villa, as Agbonlahor is lying on the floor clutching his left knee.
  • 1'
    Assist Marc Albrighton
  • 1'
    Goal Ashley Westwood
GOAL! A dream start for Aston Villa as Westwood puts them ahead after only 55 seconds! Agbonlahor bursts down the left wing before firing the ball across the box. Albrighton scuffs his shot but has time to lay the ball off to Westwood on the edge of the penalty area, and he fires his effort past Harper and into the back of the net. 1-0!
  • 1'
And we're off! Hull get us underway, kicking from right-to-left.
  • The sun is shining brightly and both sets of fans are in fine voice as the two teams make their way onto the pitch.
  • Aston Villa, meanwhile, are in desperate need of three points after failing to win any of their last six league games, with five of those clashes ending in defeat. The poor run has left them just three points clear of the relegation zone, and they, too, face two strong opponents - Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur - in their final two games of the season. Realistically, today's game is their last chance to pick up a win, but it will by no means be an easy feat; Hull have conceded just 45 goals this season, fewer than both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.
  • Hull are as good as safe from relegation after an impressive first season back in the Premier League, but a win today will guarantee their safety ahead of two tough games against Manchester United and Everton.
  • As for Hull, boss Steve Bruce has decided to make just one change to the side that valiantly fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 away to Fulham last Saturday. Maynor Figueroa returns to the startling line up after missing out against the Cottagers last weekend, and he replaces Alex Bruce, who takes the Honduran's place on the substitutes' bench.
  • Paul Lambert has made two changes to the side that were comfortably beaten 4-1 by Swansea City last weekend. Leandro Bacuna and Karim El Ahmadi both drop to the bench, making way for Ciaran Clark and Matthew Lowton to replace them.
  • Hull City substitutes: Jakupovic, Bruce, Koren, Quinn, Boyd, Fryatt, Sagbo
  • Hull City starting line-up: Harper; Chester, Davies, Rosenior; Meyler, Livermore; Figueroa, Huddlestone, El Mohamady; Jelavic, Long
  • Aston Villa substitutes: Steer, Bacuna, El Ahmadi, Sylla, Bowery, Robinson, Holt
  • Aston Villa starting line-up: Guzan; Clark, Vlaar, Baker, Lowton; Bertrand, Delph, Westwood, Albrighton; Agbonlahor, Weimann
  • First, let's have a look at how the two teams will line up, starting with the hosts...
  • Good afternoon and welcome to the live text commentary of today's Premier League game between Aston Villa and Hull City. My name is Ben Cullimore and I will be keeping you up-to-date with all of the action from Villa Park.
