  Careered forward with the confidence of a defender who knew he wouldn't be in the team at the weekend, and Buttner did well, as he usually does when called upon: defending well and playing with purpose when on the ball.

  Carlton Cole provided a stern test of Smalling's physical credentials, but he rose tall against the striker and won the majority of aerial duels. Caught out of position on a couple of occasions though and was bailed out by Phil Jones.

  Excellent performance from Jones. The central defender's reading of the game was superb, often sweeping up behind his team mates, and he took charge of loose balls, often moving out of defence to set United on their way.

  In the opposition's final third, Rafael can at times be deadly and gives United an added dimension. Can get caught out defensively, but if he were more solid you would perhaps lose the attacking flamboyance. Didn't really have anyone to mark, so gleefully got forward as much as possible.

  His final ball was poor by his high standards but watching the winger gallop down the wing is reason enough to buy a ticket to Old Trafford: he gets fans off their seats. Room for improvement but by no means a woeful display

  Anderson's throughball to Chicharito in the run up to the first goal was a thing of beauty, and if the midfielder showed more glimpses of that he'd be a real hit. Unfortunately, he is guilty of trying too hard and overruns possession frequently.

  Nani was summed up neatly in the 39th minute: beating a man excellently, looking in the box, not bothering to pick anyone out and ballooning an ambitious strike well over the bar. A frustrating talent.

  Plainly put, Giggs is not a central midfielder. Has put in a string of good performances on the wing but often gets bogged down in the middle. Obviously has the intelligence to affect the game, but fails to put it into practice nowadays.

  Busy and industrious, always moving off the ball, Chicharito poses real problems for defenders off the shoulder. Excellent movement for the first goal, but should have got one himself - lacking his normal killer instinct.

  Wayne Rooney

  Played deeper than Chicharito but was well marshalled by a clogged West Ham midfield. Was in the right place at the right time for his goal and took up intelligent positions to be picked out when United broke. Appallingly smashed a late penalty way over the bar, though.

  Looked a bit shaky all night truth be told, but made a couple of important saves to keep West Ham in the game. The amount of saves he makes week in, week out make Jaaskelainen one of the most relatively valuable goalkeepers in the Premier League.

  Equipped himself brilliantly against Antonio Valencia, and Potts' fledgling career is looking good at the moment. Made a superb goal line clearance, too, while looking to get forward to join in as much as possible.

  Jordan Spence

  Spence was shown a clean set of heels a few times by Nani, but so would many Premier League defenders. What he did after that was encouraging: getting back in position and holding the winger up, forcing him to make mistakes.

  Might look at himself and ask if he could have done better in dealing with Wayne Rooney's goal - Tomkins didn't spot the danger until it was too late. He was rash in clearing his lines and struggled to come to terms with Rooney's floating.

  Often last-ditch tackles are to make up for previous mistakes earlier in a phase of play, but Reid lunged in on many occasions to cover quick United counter attacking. Also filled in for Diarra when he went to press the ball.

  Alou Diarra

  In the heart of defence, he struggled to organise those around him. Diarra, however, is a big physical unit and imposed himself upon Chicharito. The problems for the defender came when balls were played beyond him.

  Gary O'Neil

  Had a tenacity about his game which isn't usually there; O'Neil took on the responsibility of being the midfield tracker well and stopped United playing for spells. Even if it meant a tactical foul, he was aware of his job.

  Mohamed Diame

  Diame is fairly limited in possession, but the way in which he drives from midfield with the ball is so crucial to the team, especially away from Upton Park. He was powerful and really got amongst it for the visitors.

  Wasted a glorious chance in the second half which he'll be bitterly disappointed about, but provided a good link between the attacking two and midfield from a central berth. Always looked for the ball and took up inventive positions.

  Substituted in the second half after a fairly luckless evening where he lost the battle with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones. Showed some neat touches but failed to truly impose himself.
