The LionsXII were done in by a controversial penalty as they fell to a second consecutive away defeat in the Malaysian Super League against T-Team at the Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium in Kuala Terengganu on Tuesday evening.
Badrul Hisyam struck from the spot in the 75th minute to earn Peter Butler’s side their second victory of the season, as the home side defied the odds to clinch a 1-0 victory against the visitors.
The LionsXII started the game with a makeshift backline, with the young and inexperienced duo of Ali Hudzaifi and Faris Azienuddin coming in at left-back and centreback respectively, with Faritz Hameed and Irwan Shah alongside them.
T-Team had problems of their own as former Netherlands international George Boateng was ruled out of the match due to injury while their other foreigner, ex-Hull City striker Caleb Folan, pulled his hamstring in the closing stages of the first half and had to be replaced.
The hosts dominated the game from the first whistle, but was unable to make a breakthrough as the visitors stayed compact and disciplined at the back.
The Titans got the only goal of the game when referee Samsudin Ibrahim controversially pointed to the spot after adjudging Faritz Hameed to have handled the ball in the box, despite looking like it had come off the defender's chest instead.
Badrul stepped up to send Izwan Mahbud the wrong way from the spot, sparking wild celebrations on the T-Team bench and their fans.
Despite being a goal down, the LionsXII did not give up and twice came close to equalizing in the dying minutes.
Substitute Raihan Rahman spotted goalkeeper Marzuki Yusof off his line and tried his luck from thirty yards, but his speculative effort came off the bar.
In injury time, Isa Halim made a lovely run down the middle only to see his shot go agonizingly wide as the LionsXII succumbed to their second loss in five games.
Coach V. Sundramoorthy's boys will next face Selangor PKNS in the Malaysian FA Cup on this Friday, January 25 at the Petaling Jaya stadium in Kelana Jaya, Kuala Lumpur in yet another early kickoff at 4.45pm.
