Lonergan was in fine form all afternoon in the Wanderers' goal, producing a number of good saves, including one to deny Fletcher from close range. Could do nothing about Gardner's equaliser.

The former Fulham defender was a strong physical presence at the back, but found Sunderland striker Fletcher tough to deal with and allowed the marksman to slip free on a number of occasions.

Bossed the game for large periods as Wanderers controlled the midfield, however his influence waned in the second half and found it difficult to handle a Sunderland midfield which grew into the game.
Andrews had little impact on the game from a creative standpoint and became overrun as the visitors stretched the play in the second half.
Petrov was Bolton's main creative force, he almost provided Sordell with his second of the game with an excellent through ball and came close with a curling strike midway through the second half.
Was a willing runner for the cause, but was not involved in any clear-cut chances that Bolton created.
Sordell was always a danger for the Sunderland defence and notched Wanderers' second goal with a well-placed header from close range.
Came on for the injured Riley and performed reasonably well, nullifying the threat from McClean down the left hand side.
Was thrown into the fray late on but had little time to make an impact.
Came on midway through the second half and helped calm the Bolton side, even though he was not able to prevent a Sunderland equaliser.
Looked shaky all afternoon in the Sunderland goal, but he did have to play behind a back four which performed to a very poor standard.
Cuellar's stray pass was directly responsible for Bolton's opening goal and the Argentinian was eventually substituted after a nightmare afternoon in which he never truly settled.

Vaughan was perhaps the least influential of the Black Cats' trio of central midfielders, but the former Blackpool man did help his side retain possession well for long spells in the second half.

Spurned a number of chances from point-blank range but always posed a danger and on another day could have scored a hat-trick.
Produced a lively display in midfield in which he pushed forward at every opportunity and maintained possession excellently.
Netted the goal which got Sunderland back into the game, Wickham's physical approach meant he was always a handful for the Bolton defence.
