After a dream 3-0 victory against Malaysia in the tournament opener, Singapore suffered a morale-sapping 1-0 loss to Indonesia in their second group match as they let slip the chance to secure qualifcation to the semi-finals early.
However, the Lions head into their final Group B game against Laos knowing that they only need a draw to make it to the next round, regardless of the score between Malaysia and Indonesia in the other game.
Singapore sit in second place on three points, one behind leaders Indonesia and tied with Malaysia in third, but their superior goal difference means qualification lies in their own hands. Meanwhile, Laos have to beat them, while hoping that Indonesia do them a favor by defeating Malaysia as well.
Lions coach Radojko Avramovic will be without full-back Irwan Shah, who was sent off against Indonesia, while left-back Shaiful Esah is a doubt with a sprained ankle. This should see midfielder Shi Jiayi filling in at right-back, while Daniel Bennett shifts to the opposite flank.
The Serbian will also have to do without vice-captain Hariss Harun, who has a fractured shin-bone. Isa Halim is likely to fill in at defensive midfield, while Aleksandar Duric is set to start his first game of this tournament. The towering striker's presence should come in handy, as Laos have looked vulnerable to crosses in their last two games.
Singapore need to be compact and not allow Laos to hit them on the break, as their lone striker Khampheng Sayavutthi spearheads an attack that is ably backed up by coach Kokichi Kimura's preferred five-man midfield.
