2010 surprise package Philippines started the campaign on a losing note against hosts Thailand, losing 2-1. A late fightback failed to make up for a poor start.

"Disappointing result but we need to pick our head up," said Rob Grier at the pre-match conference.

"We tend to produce our best performances when our backs are to the wall. There's plenty to play for."

Philippines will be without their coach Hans Michael Weiss but the coach conceded it will be a tough battle regardless, adding: "Tomorrow's likely a do-or-die game. Even four points from a draw and a win may not be enough. Whoever loses will surely go home."

"Now we need warriors for tomorrow's game. It's going to be a tough battle and we need players who are ready to give it all. In the last game several players didn't perform, now we can't afford that.

"We have to keep playing the way we are, the way we've planned. Sometimes we lose that and it cause problems. I don't want too much long ball."

Vietnam meanwhile will miss Dao Van Phong who suffered fractured ribs against Myanmar. Au Van Hoan and Pham Nguyen Sa will also be absent, due to ligament injury and fever respectively.

"Tomorrow's game is very important," said Vietnam coach Phan Thanh Hung.

"We need to win if we want to go any further. Philippines are a very strong side with foreign-based players.

"Actually they deserved a draw with Thailand in my opinion. They put a lot of pressure late in the game."

  • Vietnam's first international game was against Philippines in Manila in 1991. It ended in a 2-2 draw.
  • Both sides met in the group stage of the previous edition. Vietnam lost 0-2 to Philippines in Hanoi.
  • Accoring to Fifa rankings, Vietnam and Philippines are the top two Asean football teams for November.

  • Philippines have never won a single match when the AFF Championship has been held in Thailand. Their record: W0 D1 L5.
  • From the Azkals starting eleven against Vietnam from two years ago, only six players have made their way into the current AFF Cup 2012 roster.
  • James Younghusband received his 50th cap when Philippines lost 2-1 to Thailand in the previous game.
