Player Ratings: England 5-0 San Marino

The Three Lions put five goals past La Serenissima in their World Cup qualifying clash with Manchester United striking duo Danny Welbeck and Wayne Rooney both scoring twice

    Joe Hart

As much a spectator as the near 85,000 fans who filled Wembley, the ball was rarely in England's half let alone near Hart's goal. Untested throughout the night.

  • Gary Cahill

    Gary Cahill

Got forward often, hanging in and around San Marino's penalty box to add greater aerial threat to England's offence. Perhaps should have scored when he completely mistimed a volley from 6-yards, striking only air.

  • Kyle Walker

    Kyle Walker

Got forward with less regularity than Baines on the opposite flank, and when he did he rarely beat his man, often let down by poor control. Had a couple of ill-conceived shots from range that rarely beat the first man.

  • Leighton Baines

    Leighton Baines

Spent much of the game deep in San Marino's final third and was never troubled defensively. Played a number of crosses of varying degrees of danger. Curled a 30-yard free-kick just past the angle of the crossbar, though half the stadium thought it had gone in.

  • Phil Jagielka

    Phil Jagielka

Gobbled up the often isolated Danilo with relative ease, though showed his lack of speed when the San Marino striker burst past him to have the visiting side's only shot on goal.

  • Michael Carrick

    Michael Carrick

Hit the crossbar in the first half with a 25-yard drive. Could perhaps be accused of passing too laterally in the first half, providing few incisive passes. Squandered the opportunity to finish an excellent, flowing team move when he fired the ball straight at Simoncini from 10-yards. Was replaced in the 67th minute by Shelvey.

  • Tom Cleverley

    Tom Cleverley

England's quietest player in the first half, he sat deep and allowed others to occupy the space in and around San Marino's box. Pushed forward more in the second half, contributing to England's slicker first touch pass and move approach. Burst down the right before pulling the ball back for Welbeck to notch his second goal of the night.

  • Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

    Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Approached the game as an opportunity to entertain the crowd, though sometimes that showmanship and enthusiasm lost his side possession unnecessarily. Probed the San Marino defence but got little reward for his efforts until his curling, looping first time shot evaded Simoncini's reach.

  • Danny Welbeck

Danny Welbeck Top of the Match

Should have opened England's account early on but missed a sitter from 6-yards when he prodded the ball against the post. Made amends minutes later when he rounded Simoncini before the San Marino goalkeeper swiped his legs to win a penalty. Scored a goal reminiscent of his strike against Sweden as he back-heel flicked the ball past Simoncini. Added a second goal in the second half as he tapped-in Cleverley's pull-back.

  • Theo Walcott

    34

    Theo Walcott

Took a heavy blow from the onrushing Simoncini as he attempted to chip the San Marino goalkeeper. Winded and battered, Walcott was forced to leave the game early and was hospitalised with his rib problem.

  • Wayne Rooney

    Wayne Rooney

Played a deeper role than usual for England, dropping in and out of the hole. Had several free headers in the first half that he put high and wide, but he made no mistakes from the spot. Opened the scoring for the Three Lions with a penalty right into the top corner. Scored his second goal, and England's third, with a cool first time low finish into the bottom corner.

Substitutions

  • Jonjo Shelvey

    Jonjo Shelvey

Came on for Carrick with just under half an hour remaining. Played an excellent crossfield pass in the build up to Rooney's second goal. Was busy in midfield, and had a powerful shot well saved by Simoncini.

  • Aaron Lennon
    71

    Aaron Lennon

Replaced the injured Walcott in the 10th minute to create an all-Spurs right flank with Walker behind him. Burst into the box near the end of the first half and pulled the ball back for Welbeck to flick into the net. Grabbed a second assist when the ball bounced off his shin and into the patch of Rooney who slotted the ball past Simoncini.

  • Andy Carroll

    Andy Carroll

Replaced Rooney with a little over 15 minutes remaining. Showed his aerial power and force in glimpses.

  • Aldo Junior Simoncini

    Aldo Junior Simoncini

Was quick off his line to block and clear Walcott's attempted chip, ending the England winger's match in the process. Conceded a penalty to provide England the chance to open the scoring, with the accountant clipping the feet of Welbeck inside the box. Made a number of decent saves but was powerless to stop England cruising to victory with five goals.

  • Alessandro Della Valle

    Alessandro Della Valle

The San Marino bank clerk-come-no nonsense centre-back dove into a couple of crunching challenges. Perhaps could have conceded a penalty when he bundled over Lennon inside the box. Used his face to block Cleverley's goal-bound half-volley.

  • Cristian Brolli
    12
    8
    1.50

    Cristian Brolli

Covered his right-back quite well, blocking a number of crosses from the boot of Baines. Struggled to deal with the movement of Welbeck especially when the lanky striker attempted to pull off him and run in behind. Allowed him to dart behind him for the penalty.

  • Davide Simoncini
    10
    7

    Davide Simoncini

Less troubled than his team-mates, Simoncini reads the game quite well when it was in front of him, but looked vulnerable when England got in behind. Often pulled wide to aid his fullback. Didn't know whether to stick on Welbeck or drop deep and pick up Rooney.

  • Fabio Vitaioli
    10

    Fabio Vitaioli

Often stalled ands blocked the advances of Baines, but was less confident when dealing with Oxlade-Chamberlain. The Arsenal winger was a real thorn when he came inside for Vitaioli. Was replaced by Bacciocchi towards the end of the match.

  • Michele Cervellini
    11

    Michele Cervellini

Though he wore the number nine, Cervellini sat deep in midfield and aided Coppini in San Marino's desperate attempts to absorb England's pressure.

  • Mirko Palazzi

    2.00

    Mirko Palazzi

Contained the forward advances of Walker quite well, but lost Lennon for Welbeck's goal. Was more content to shepherd his opponents down the line than he was when they moved inside.

  • Alex Gasperoni

    2.00

    Alex Gasperoni

Played more like a fullback at times rather than a left winger, but was one of the few San Marino players to break forward in support of Danilo, but was largely ineffective.

  • Enrico Cibelli

    Enrico Cibelli

Rarely given the opportunity to run at Baines, Cibelli found himself primarily tasked with trying to contain the Everton full-back, but to little avail. Worked hard in supporting his full-back.

  • Matteo Coppini

Matteo Coppini Flop of the Match

Worked hard in midfield, making a couple of strong challenges, but was generally baffled by the movement and speed of England's attack. Was replaced by Buscarini with 15 minutes remaining.

  • Danilo Ezequiel Rinaldi

    Danilo Ezequiel Rinaldi

Given the thankless task of leading the line for his side. He worked hard, but was chasing lost causes for much of the night and was very isolated. Had San Marino's only shot when he burst past Jagielka before slicing well wide. Was replaced by Marani with 10 minutes remaining.

Substitutions

  • Simone Bacciocchi
