José Reina Paez Flop of the Match

Was enjoying a quiet night until he disastrously spilled Templeton's long-range effort into his own net. Suarez saved the Spaniard's blushes with the late equaliser on the night, but the goalkeeping mistakes are becoming all too regular.

  • Jamie Carragher

    Jamie Carragher

Occasionally rash in the challenge and showed his weakness on the ball but helped Downing to adjust to his new role at the back with his instructions.

    Martin Kelly

Kelly is a solid defender but lacks the ability on the ball of Johnson and showed that here. Played some poor crosses on occasion but never looked threatened defensively.

Had no trouble in dealing with the physical threat of Hearts striker Sutton and brought the ball out well.

    Joe Allen

A metronome in the Reds' midfield, willing to receive the ball under pressure and start a number of attacks. Also showed his tenacity in the tackle, taking on the role of the absent Lucas.

  • Jordan Henderson

Did not look comfortable out on the wing but worked hard and showed some clever touches when allowed into central positions.

Continued where he left of against Manchester City, keeping the ball well and working hard for the team.

  • Stewart Downing

    Stewart Downing

Flourished at left-back putting in some dangerous crosses and showing the confidence he appears to sorely lack further up the pitch.

  • Steven Gerrard

    Steven Gerrard

Almost broke the deadlock with a slalom run through the Hearts defence but was denied brilliantly by Macdonald. Liverpool's most effective attacking player on the night.

  • Adam Morgan

    Adam Morgan

Looked overawed by the occasion and was understandably sloppy at times but worked himself into the ground for the cause. Denied a goal after Suarez's cutback was correctly adjudged to have crossed the line.

  • Luis Suárez

    Luis Suárez

Troubled by a poor first touch for much of the opening stages and failed to find Morgan when the youngster had broken free on several occasions. Showed yet more of his wasteful finishing in somehow contriving not to score after rounding the goalkeeper but made up for it all by scoring a brilliant winner.

Substitutions

As dangerous as ever when introduced as a substitute. Gave Grainger a considerably more difficult time than Morgan had.

Rarely touched the ball upon arriving but made Liverpool threatening on the counter with his clever runs.

Like his team, the defender rode his luck at times, but was part of an admirable defensive display against illustrious opponents.

    Darren Barr

Could rarely get a foot in on the impressive Joe Allen and showed his frustration with a late hack in the second half.

    Danny Grainger

Had little to deal with as Adam Morgan struggled playing fromt he left but was given a torrid time by Raheem Sterling following his introduction.

    Marius Zaliukas

Led his team from the back with a captain's performance at centre-half. Made a vital block on the line from a Suarez header but looked so tired when allowing the Uruguayan to pass him for the winner late on.

Something of a bright spark for Hearts early on going close with a drive from the edge of the box and having a penalty claim turned down. Spent much of the rest of the night working hard for his team.

Showed some fine touches early on and looked like Hearts' most threatening player on the break. Somewhat fortunate to see his goal spill over the line but if you don't buy a ticket...
