Brunei DPMM progressed to the League Cup final with a straightforward 2-0 victory over SAF FC at Jalan Besar Stadium on Tuesday night.
The visiting side drew first blood as Tales Dos Santos gave the team a lead in the 10th minute of the game. The lanky defender was left unmarked in the penalty box to head in from an Azwan Salleh corner kick.
Four minutes later, Azwan almost turned from provider to goalscorer but his low driven shot from twenty yards out flew inches past Shahril Jantan’s post.
SAFFC were virtually restricted from venturing into the attacking third for most part of the half as Santos provided leadership for the Wasps at the back.
The Warriors were reduced to taking pot-shots from outside the penalty box as they went forward looking for the equalising goal. But attempts from Tatsuro Inui, Shimpei Sakurada and Mislav Karoglan soon after were nowhere near to the target nor did it trouble Wardun Yussof in goal.
Da Silva nearly added to his tally towards the half hour mark when he spotted Shahril off his line but the Brazilian's shot from twenty five yards out was tipped over the crossbar by the goalkeeper's outstretched finger.
Five minutes before the teams headed to the dressing room, a lapse in the DPMM defence enabled the men in blue to have a rare chance at attack. Inui unleashed a thunderous attempt on goal which was brilliantly palmed away by Wardun to keep the scoreline intact.
A goal down, Richard Bok made several changes, bringing on Razaleigh Khalik and Ruzaini Zainal for Eddie Chang and Fazrul Nawaz in the 46th and 66th minute respectively.
The extra men in midfield enabled the Warriors to regain dominance in the centre of the park and create more chances as compared to the first half.
But it was not to be SAFFC's night as the Wasps added a second to their tally 11 minutes before the final whistle.
Second half substitute Adi Said left the Warriors' defence stuck on their feet as he cleverly beat the offside trap to break through on goal. With only the goalkeeper to beat, the forward made no mistake in ensuring the Bruneians reached the League Cup final on Saturday.
