Balestier Khalsa 1-0 Woodlands Wellington: Tigers reach Plate final

The match was decided by a scrappy goal from Zulkiffli Hassim sending the Tigers to the Plate final against Courts Young Lions on Friday

The game was almost like watching a game of ping-pong as both Balestier Khalsa and Woodlands Wellington regularly played long balls upfield.

The Tigers had the bulk of possession but were usually caught offside when they were on the offensive. Woodlands on the other hand, could only manage to have a go from long range with no real danger for Daniel Ong in goal.

Minutes before the half hour mark, Ang Bang Heng pulled off a brilliant save to keep the Rams in the game as Zdravko Dragicevic’s header from a cornerkick was tipped over the crossbar by the visiting custodian.

Two minutes later, Ang was in action once again as he did well to palm away Ruhaizad Ismail's cross cum shot from the left flank.

Woodlands' best chance of the game was squandered by South Korean Moon Soon Ho towards the end of the first half.

Moon cleverly broke off from Paul Cunningham and was through on goal but instead of bringing the ball forward towards goal for an easier strike at goal, the forward decided to try a cheeky lob from the edge of the box which completely missed its destination.

After the break, it was one-way traffic as the Rams ran out of ideas and their defence finally crumbled in the 66th minute.

Dragicevic easily went past Duncan Elias down the right flank before sending the ball to the near post and towards the on-rushing Zulkiffli Hassim who managed to knock the ball over the line with the slightest of touches with Ang not being able to hold onto the ball firmly.

Zulkiffli could have added a second four minutes later but his low driven shot was cleared off the line by Zulkarnian Malik.

Nevertheless his solitary strike was enough to send the Tigers to finals of the Plate competition against Courts Young Lions on Friday at Jalan Besar Stadium.

The Cubs defeated Tanjong Pagar 2-1 with two goals in the space of two minutes in the second-half from Abdul Hameed and Benjamin Kristoffersen Lee cancelling out Hafiz Osman's eight minute opener.
