Player Ratings: Real Madrid 2-2 Espanyol

Goal.com rates the players on show as los Blancos failed to recover from their midweek woes, as a late equaliser from the visitors heaped more pressure on Jose Mourinho

By Tom Webber

  • Iker Casillas

    Iker Casillas

The keeper had relatively little to do throughout the game as Espanyol rarely got forward. Could do nothing to keep out Sergio Garcia's goal and was let down by his defenders on Albin's equalisers.

  • Pepe

    3
    3.00

    Pepe

Was guilty of switching off too much in the first half. He left too much space for Sergio Garcia to score the opener and looked vulnerable to the counterattack. He was vastly improved after the break, though.

  • Sergio Ramos

    2
    3.00

    Sergio Ramos

Seemed to lack awareness in the first half as he played a part in the conceding of the opening goal. He was posed with very little to do for the remainder of the game but could not clear the ball as Albin equalised. Average showing from one of Madrid's leaders.

  • Fabio Coentrao

    Fabio Coentrao

An impressive performance the left-back, as he chased up and down all evening. He regularly tested Javi Lopez and won his side some free kicks in dangerous areas. Capped his performance with a smart finish in the 48th minute.

  • Arbeloa
    0
    3
    3.00

    Arbeloa

Was relied on to supply much of the width on the right in the first half but failed to do so effectively. He struggled to get the ball into the area but faced very little defensively. Perhaps could have found the net early in the second half, but was denied by Casilla.

  • Sami Khedira

    1
    3.00

    Sami Khedira

Was eager to get forward in the early stages but this left his defenders exposed at times. After the Espanyol opener he was more conscious of this, but still bagged an assist with a brilliant cross for Ronaldo on the stroke of half-time.

  • Mesut Özil

    3.50

    Mesut Özil

Released Ronaldo in the second minute with an exquisite flick and his creativity remained at a high level all night. His delivery was consistently accurate and he improved in a more central role in the second half.

  • Xabi Alonso
    2
    1
    2.50

    Xabi Alonso

Not one of Alonso's best games as he struggled to get on the ball in midfield. His passing was not as unerringly accurate as usual and he was on the periphery most of the action throughout the game.

  • Luka Modric
    6

    3.00

    Luka Modric

Once more playing in the attacking quartet of the side, Modric looked the part. His passing was accurate and he hit the post with a first-half effort. Howevert, he was substituted at half-time as Mourinho looked for greater width from his side.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo
    3
    1
    3.50

    Cristiano Ronaldo

Played as a central striker at the start and almost had an instant impact but he shot wide in the second minute. He got his goal on the stroke of half-time but should well have had another, failing to connect with a volley on the hour mark.

  • José Callejón
    2
    1
    3.00

    José Callejón

Nothing seemed to fall for Callejon, as a poor first touch or unfortunate slip saw him invariably fail to make the most of some decent opportunities. He got into all the right places but just could not make it count.

  • Ángel Di María

    Ángel Di María

Improved things dramatically after coming on at half-time. He offered much more width and consistently supplied his team-mates with excellent chances. Only denied a goal by a stunning Casilla save.

  • Morata

    1
    2.50

    Morata

Replaced Callejon in the 73rd minute and missed a great chance to put the game beyond doubt as his header was deflected over by Moreno.

  • Kiko Casilla

Kiko Casilla Top of the Match

You would not have guessed he was the second-choice keeper given he pulled off a number of stunning stops that kept his side close in the second half. Tipped a deflected Di Maria shot on the bar in what will go down as one of the saves of the season.

  • Juan Daniel Forlín

    3.00

    Juan Daniel Forlín

The Argentine midfielder had a solid evening, as he congested the middle of the park to restrict the space for the Madrid attackers. He policed the game well and screened his defence capably.

  • Héctor Moreno

    3.00

    Héctor Moreno

The Mexican centre-back did well to keep things organised during the first half. He made a terrific tackle to keep out Callejon in the 26th minute but Madrid eventually found their way through.

  • Javier López Rodríguez

    1
    2.50

    Javier López Rodríguez

The full-back could have been braver when challenging Ronaldo, as the Portuguese poked home a first-half equaliser. He then failed to track the run of Coentrao as he netted the second.

  • Diego Daniel Colotto

    1
    3.00

    Diego Daniel Colotto

Made some excellent last-ditch interventions to keep his side in touching reach, particularly when getting back to clear away Arbeloa's effort. He was solid in the air and refused to be bullied.

  • Víctor Guillermo Álvarez Delgado

    3.00

    Víctor Guillermo Álvarez Delgado

The youngster had a fairly decent outing as he restricted the effectiveness of Arbeloa on the right and also kept an eye on Ozil's nearby movements. Withdrawn in the second half for Capdevilla.

  • Víctor Sánchez Mata

    1
    3.00

    Víctor Sánchez Mata

Hunted the ball down well in the middle of the park and always seemed to be closing down whoever was in possession. Once he picked it up, he used it well in a competent display.

  • Verdú
    0
    1
    2.50

    Verdú

Played an intelligent game in behind the striker but did not see enough of the ball to have a devastating impact. His quick thinking set Sergio Garcia on his way to the opening goal.

  • Simão
    0
    1
    2.50

    Simão

Worked hard for his side but spent much of his time tracking back to help defend against Arbeloa. He did get one chance in the first half but screwed his effort horribly wide and would have liked to have been more effective in the Madrid half.

  • Wakaso
    0
    1
    1.50

    Wakaso Flop of the Match

The Ghanaian had a disappointing night as his dreadful decision-making led to a number of awful challenges. Having failed to change his ways after an early booking he was withdrawn by Aguirre in the 29th minute.

  • Sergio García
    0
    1
    3.50

    Sergio García

An energetic display from the striker as his powerful running made him a nuisance for the Madrid defence. He capitalised on one of their lapses to slot home the opener and continued to work hard up top alone for his side.

Substitutions

  • Joan Capdevila

    1
    3.00

    Joan Capdevila

Replaced Victor Alvarez on the hour mark and used his experience to tighten things up on the back after Di Maria's introduction.

  • J. Albín
    0
    1
    3.50

    J. Albín

Came on for Verdu with 20 minutes remaining and proved to be an inspired change, slotting home a 88th-minute equaliser.

  • Alfonso

    1
    3.00

    Alfonso

Would not have been expecting such an early entrance to the game as he replaced Wakaso in the 29th minute. He was far more reserved than the fiery Ghanaian and added some more cover in the wide areas.
