Papiss Cisse's wonder-goal lit up a thrilling encounter as the Saints did well in attack, with Rickie Lambert scoring his 100th goal for the club, but faltered at the back

By Matt Scott at St James' Park

  • Rob Elliot

    2.50

    Rob Elliot

Could have done little to keep Schneiderlin's opener out early on but recovered well on his Premier League debut, stopping a Lambert free kick. His distribution left a lot to be desired, so it perhaps ironic that his heave upfield ended up assisting Cisse's wonder-goal.

  • Fabricio Coloccini

    Fabricio Coloccini

Defended with strength and poise when required, but injured himself while acrobatically clearing the ball and was forced off just before half-time with an apparent back injury.

  • Davide Santon

    Davide Santon

Found Lallana a tricky customer on the right flank, but remained committed against the Saints' skipper. Always a threat going forward and the Italy international grabbed an assist for his side's fourth as his cross caused chaos and ended up bobbling in off Hooiveld.

  • Mathieu Debuchy

    Mathieu Debuchy

Stormed up the right wing throughout and looks to have made a seamless transition to Premier League football. Sent several dangerous balls into the area and lashed a volley from distance wide, while being rarely tested at the back.

  • Steven Taylor

    1.50

    Steven Taylor

Lost Lambert in the area for both of the visitors' goals and looked clumsy on the ball throughout. Turned in a particularly nervy second half after being shorn of regular defensive partner, Coloccini, to injury.

  • Yohan Cabaye

    3.50

    Yohan Cabaye

Orchestrated his side from deep and put in the odd tackle where required. Capped off a pleasing display by sealing the three points from 12 yards after Fox handballed Debuchy's cross.

  • Moussa Sissoko

    3.50

    Moussa Sissoko

Found himself well marshalled by Cork for much of the first half, but finally broke free of the Englishman to turn in his third home goal in just two games at St James' Park after Boruc parried Gouffran's low effort into his path, three yards out.

  • Jonas Gutierrez

    Jonas Gutierrez

A quiet afternoon for the Argentine, particularly in an attacking sense, but he worked hard up and down the flank all game, supporting Debuchy well.

  • Cheikh Tiote

Cheikh Tiote Top of the Match

Back to somewhere representing his best for the Toon this season. Charged around the midfield, crashing into tackles bravely, and cleanly, while also spraying the ball intelligently across the pitch.

  • Papiss Cissé

    Papiss Cissé

Spurned a gilt-edged chance to equalise as he scuffed wide from four yards, but responded in the best possible way to score the Magpies' second, latching onto Elliot's long ball and unleashing a wondrous 35-yard volley that flew over Boruc and dipped under the crossbar to put his name in the running for goal for the season.

  • Yoan Gouffran

    Yoan Gouffran

His pace and tenacity make him a constant threat on the left flank. Assisted Sissoko's goal after zooming past Clyne and seeing his low shot parried into his compatriot's path by Boruc.

    Mapou Yangambiwa

Replaced his stricken skipper and defended fairly well, showing good pace to cut out Southampton attacks. Also possesses good technique, bringing the ball out of defence neatly a couple of times.

  • James Perch

    James Perch

Came on for the 250th league appearance of his career as the Toon saw out the win, mopping things up well in a 20-minute cameo.

  • Vurnon Anita

    Vurnon Anita

Came on for Gouffran with a couple of minutes remaining.

  • Artur Boruc

    2.00

    Artur Boruc

Could have done very little to keep any of the Magpies' four goals out in truth, although will have been disappointed to see Cisse's strike go in, purely for the distance which it travelled.

  • Nathaniel Clyne
    0
    3
    2.50

    Nathaniel Clyne

Had a battle on his hands against the rapid Gouffran and, although the Frenchman beat him on a couple of occasions, he also got the better of the former Bordeaux winger at times too. Bombed forward when he could in an attempt to support Lallana.

  • Maya Yoshida

    3
    2.00

    Maya Yoshida

Slightly more composed than his defensive partner, although was still troubled by the effervescence of the Newcastle attack. Looked tidy on the ball, however, playing the ball out from the back nicely at times.

  • Jos Hooiveld

Jos Hooiveld Flop of the Match

The cumbersome Dutchman was troubled by Cisse's pace and power throughout as the Senegal man never gave him a moment's peace. Clunky in possession and topped a wretched afternoon off as he got in the way of Fox's clearance to bundle home an own-goal and seal the hosts' win.

  • Luke Shaw
    4
    1
    2.50

    Luke Shaw

Coped well with Jonas' threat down the right, but did look in trouble when Debuchy bombed on and he found himself outnumbered. Forced off early in the second half with what appeared to be a thigh strain.

  • Morgan Schneiderlin
    2
    1
    4.00

    Morgan Schneiderlin

Got his side off to the perfect start in the third minute, latching onto Lambert's knock-down and firing past Elliot. Didn't shirk the tactical clash against Cabaye or the physical battle with Tiote, in a fine afternoon's work for the Frenchman.

  • Steven Davis
    0
    3
    2.00

    Steven Davis

Knocked the ball around neatly and looked to get as close as possible to Lambert in attack, although could not really stamp his authority on the game and was replaced by Ramirez just after the hour.

  • Jack Cork

    1
    3.50

    Jack Cork

The midfielder found his progress earlier in the season stunted after picking up a knock at the Olympics, but he put in a fine performance against the powerful Sissoko. Tracked the Frenchman well and kept him fairly quiet, although did not follow him far enough as the Toon No.7 netted a first-half equaliser.

  • Adam Lallana
    2
    1
    3.00

    Adam Lallana

At the heart of all the visitors' good attacking play, although it could never be sustained. Linked up well with Lambert as he drifted in off the right flank. Set up the striker's equaliser and went close himself form the edge of the area.

  • Rickie Lambert
    3
    1
    3.50

    Rickie Lambert

Had a quiet game overall but showed his deft touch to flick the ball down to Schneiderlin for the opening goal and then his predatory instinct early in the second half to sweep Lallana's cross home for his 100th Southampton strike.

  • Jay Rodriguez

    Jay Rodriguez

Operated from the left flank and could rarely get the better of the nippy Debuchy. Let himself down by failing to track back throughout, leaving Shaw and then Fox badly outnumbered. Eventually replaced by Puncheon.

Substitutions

  • Daniel Fox

    Daniel Fox

Came on in Shaw's place and conceded a penalty for handball, albeit in soft circumstances, to give the Magpies a third goal.

  • G. Ramírez

    G. Ramírez

Given a 25-minute run-out in midfield and looked neat on the ball, without ever threatening fully.

  • Jason Puncheon

    Jason Puncheon

A late substitution as the Saints chased goals, but could not contribute.
