Both sides maintain decent form by avoiding defeat, but will come away a touch disappointed after a toothless affair at the Stadium of Light that saw chances come at a premium

By Matt Scott at the Stadium of Light

  • Simon Mignolet

    Simon Mignolet

Got down sharply to turn away Chico's close-range effort and also smothered a through-ball that De Guzman was looking to latch onto.

  • Titus Bramble

    Titus Bramble

Found the visitor's movement and interplay difficult to contain but remained fiercely committed, heading and smashing clear anything that fell loose. Denied Graham in the last minute with a brave save at the striker's feet.

  • John O'Shea

    John O'Shea

Has emerged as a fine leader at the heart of the hosts' defence and his organisational skills were again in evidence against the attack-minded Swans. Shut Schechter out of the game, while also keeping Michu and Graham quiet.

  • Alfred N'diaye

    Alfred N'diaye

Stormed around midfield, putting the Swans under pressure, but also displayed a pleasant technique on the ball. Looked a bit aimless at times and he may have to contend with the language barrier, but looks an astute purchase. His defensive solidity was sacrificed for McClean's attacking verve in the second half.

  • Sebastian Larsson

    2.50

    Sebastian Larsson

Lined up on the right wing, but constantly drifted infield and sat too deep to fully trouble Davies. Tested Tremmel with an effort from a wide free kick, forcing the German to scramble across his goal and parry the well-struck shot.

  • Craig Gardner

    Craig Gardner

Pablo's willingness to drift in from the left meant that Gardner was perhaps not as busy as he might have anticipated. Contributed little going forward and hit a couple of efforts from free kicks off target.

  • Jack Colback

    1.50

    Jack Colback

Struggled against Dyer throughout and ended up resorting to fouling the former Southampton man. Was clumsy in possession and didn't dare to venture forward, with Dyer's pace always a threat.

  • David Vaughan

    David Vaughan

Put in a couple of decent challenges as Swansea tried to tickle the ball around midfield. His basic style of passing was often accurate but never a threat.

  • Adam Johnson

Adam Johnson Flop of the Match

Attacked Tiendalli on the left flank on occasion, but could not provide a sustained threat, was eventually replaced by Wickham after a completely fruitless game.

  • Stéphane Sessegnon
    0
    0
    2.00

    Stéphane Sessegnon

Found himself drifting to the right wing, where Larsson was rarely to be found and unable to get involved in the game. Found Davies a committed opponent and could not get the better of him.

  • Steven Fletcher

    Steven Fletcher

Completely isolated in attack and was often forced well out of dangerous positions in an attempt to get involved in proceedings. A frustrating evening's work.

Substitutions

  • James McClean

    James McClean

introduced with Sunderland looking likely to score, but he could not provide the key to unlock the Swans' defence.

  • Connor Wickham

    Connor Wickham

A late introduction to the game. Barely touched the ball in a 10-minute cameo.

  • Gerhard Tremmel

    2.50

    Gerhard Tremmel

Had very little to do throughout the evening, but was alert to keep Larsson's free kick out, while displaying strength and confidence when claiming crosses.

  • Chico

    3.50

    Chico Top of the Match

An all-action performance from the Spaniard. Man-marked Fletcher out of the first half and also went the closest to scoring as Mignolet clawed his effort on the swivel out. Showed a good deal of proficiency on the ball when pushing forward, but never shied from his defensive duties.

  • Ashley Williams
    3
    0
    3.00

    Ashley Williams

Organised his backline tremendously throughout and was an audible and visual presence. Kept Fletcher quiet and also kept calm to pass the ball out of defence accurately throughout.

  • Dwight Tiendalli
    0
    0
    2.50

    Dwight Tiendalli

Was given little to think about defensively, but was strong against McClean and Johnson. Bombed forward with aplomb and delivered a couple of decent crosses, while also flashing a powerful effort across goal.

  • Ben Davies
    1
    0
    3.00

    Ben Davies

Calm and composed from the teenager against a number of tricky opponents. Could have been troubled by the pace of Sessegnon, but remained strong against the Benin man, barely giving him an inch.

  • Leon Britton
    0
    1
    2.50

    Leon Britton

Tidy as ever anchoring the Swans' midfield, regularly found team-mates with intelligent passes and shadowed Sessegnon well when the Benin man was operating centrally. Replaced by Graham as Laudrup sought a goal.

  • Michu
    1
    0
    2.50

    Michu

Dropped deeper into a more supporting role, but that did not diminish his impact on the Swans' play, flitted across the pitch bringing team-mates into the game neatly but was rarely able to get into truly threatening positions and add to his impressive goal tally.

  • Pablo Hernández
    0
    1
    2.00

    Pablo Hernández

Drifted in from the left and always looked to get himself involved, although this made things a bit congested for the Swans and his presence may well have ended up being a hindrance. Substituted after the hour.

  • Nathan Dyer
    1
    0
    2.50

    Nathan Dyer

Gave Colback a headache all evening with his pace and tenacious running. Hit a couple of wasteful long-range efforts off target and missed a gilt-edged chance to open the scoring with 10 minutes remaining, firing wide from close range.

  • Jonathan De Guzmán
    3
    0
    2.50

    Jonathan De Guzmán

Sat alongside Britton but looked to burst forward much more than the Englishman. Delivered a couple of threatening set-pieces including one free kick that caught Mignolet out but just drifted over the bar.

  • Itay Shechter
    0
    2
    1.50

    Itay Shechter

Lacked the physical presence of Michu, or even Danny Graham, to lead the line and found himself easily bullied off the ball by O'Shea and Bramble. Hooked early in the second half after an entirely forgettable display.

Substitutions

  • Roland Lamah
    1
    0
    2.50

    Roland Lamah

Replaced Pablo and was a more obvious threat on the left wing, getting at Gardner and beating him a couple of times, but he could not provide a telling contribution.

  • Sung-Yong Ki
    5
    0
    3.00

    Sung-Yong Ki

On for Schechter early in the second half and was a clam figure in midfield. Stroked the ball around well and tested Mignolet with an effort from distance.

  • Danny Graham
    1
    0
    2.50

    Danny Graham

Booed onto the pitch by the home supporters, as a deal to take him to the Black Cats continues to be mooted. Almost snatched the points late on but was excellently denied by a Bramble block.
