Player Ratings: Liverpool 1-0 Southampton

An imperious display from the hosts saw Daniel Agger head in the only goal of the game against a lacklustre away side as the Anfield club took all three points

    Pepe Reina

The goalkeeper was rarely troubled throughout the game and was only forced into the odd save or punch from a corner.

    Glen Johnson

The full-back did fantastically well on the attack, playing high up behind Sterling on the right-side and was a constant catalyst for Liverpool’s attacks. Sometimes wasn’t quick enough in tracking back, but did well enough to quell most Southampton attacks.

  • José Enrique

    José Enrique

The Spaniard has enjoyed a couple of confident performances and it was no change against Southampton, with the full-back admirably keeping the visitors at bay down the left side and doubling up in attack confidently with either Shelvey or Sterling.

Daniel Agger Top of the Match

The Dane had kept out the Southampton threat confidently before putting the hosts in the lead with a great header past Gazzaniga just before the break. Defended admirably and cleared efficiently.

  • Martin Skrtel

    Martin Skrtel

The defender performed capably enough and deflected the away attacks with relative ease with confident clearances and interventions.

  • Steven Gerrard

    Steven Gerrard

The Liverpool captain had a commanding game and read the match well, but the occasional misplaced pass blemished an otherwise positive display.

  • Lucas Leiva

    Lucas Leiva

Making his first start since August, the Brazilian midfielder looked a bit timid in the tackle, but his passing was confident on most occasions. However, as the match progressed, he gained confidence and performed above his asking.

  • Joe Allen

    3.50

    Joe Allen

Played confidently in the middle with Gerrard and the Welshman did well to work his way out of trouble when the Southampton midfield swamped him with pressure.

  • Raheem Sterling

    3.50

    Raheem Sterling

Worked efficiently with Johnson behind him in support and also with Enrique when the Liverpool youngster frequently swapped flanks with Shelvey. Could have had a few chances on goal, however, if the attacker felt confident enough to go for goal.

  • Jonjo Shelvey
    12

    3.00

    Jonjo Shelvey

The 21-year-old’s attacking impetus was clearly on display and could very well have opened the scoring on more than one occasion in the first 45 minutes, with a second good chance for Shelvey smashing against the Southampton bar. A few misplaced passes and rushed decision-making didn't help his performance, however.

  • Luis Suárez

    Luis Suárez

Liverpool’s key man was a constant threat for the visitors’ defence, with the Uruguay international consistently looking to hug the by-line and get the ball into the middle. The striker should have had at least goal to his name, but looked to supply for others more than get on the scoresheet himself.

Substitutions

    Jamie Carragher

Replaced Lucas in the latter minutes of the game to shore up the defence but did little of note.

    Jordan Henderson

Arrived in the game in the last 20 minutes and offered some fresh legs to the busy Liverpool midfield

    Paulo Gazzaniga

The Argentine was forced into a few saves by the Liverpool attack, with some being dealt with more confidently than others. Agger’s header was well-placed and strong enough to be a tough one to keep out for any goalkeeper. Made a several stops in the second-half to keep from Liverpool doubling their lead.

  • Nathaniel Clyne

    Nathaniel Clyne

The full-back had to deal with Shelvey and Sterling swapping flanks, as well as the on-form Enrique and on occasion was outdone by the three of them. However, Clyne was the strongest of the two Southampton full-backs, as Shaw struggled on the opposite side.

  • Maya Yoshida
    0
    0
    2.50

    Maya Yoshida

Like Fonte, had a hard time with Suarez whilst also keeping tabs on Shelvey and Sterling. But again, limited the amount of shots from the hosts.

  • Jose Rocha Fonte

    2.50

    Jose Rocha Fonte

Suarez was the obvious thorn in the Southampton defence’s side and the Uruguayan was a pest for both Fonte and Yoshida, with the Liverpool attacker far too often allowed to race to the by-line. Fonte did do well on occasion, however, to clear threatening balls into the box and restrict the Reds’ shot tally.

  • Luke Shaw
    0
    1
    2.00

    Luke Shaw

With Johnson and Sterling frequently bombing down the flank, Shaw all too often allowed crosses from his side of the pitch to enter the visitors’ area and it was from his side that Liverpool’s opener was supplied.

  • Morgan Schneiderlin

    2.50

    Morgan Schneiderlin

The midfielder was given the hard task of keeping Liverpool’s central midfielders at bay and thwarting their advances, which was done only occasionally and not enough to restrict their balls through to the likes of Suarez and Sterling.

  • G. Ramírez

    3
    1.50

    G. Ramírez Flop of the Match

The striker failed to lead Southampton up top and had very few sights on goal thanks to the strength of the Liverpool defence. A largely disappointing performance.

  • Jack Cork

    0
    2.00

    Jack Cork

Was forced to hold the middle ground with Schneiderlin and all too often saw the ball go past him as Allen and Gerrard dominated in midfield. Cork was sometimes able to get the ball out to Lallana and up to Lambert, but not nearly as much as he needed to.

  • Adam Lallana
    0
    2
    2.50

    Adam Lallana

The attacker didn’t have the amount of time on the ball as he would have liked, but when the ball was played out to him on the wing, Lallana did look bright.

  • Jason Puncheon
    0
    1
    2.50

    Jason Puncheon

It was more the case of trying to regain possession than play the ball forward to the attackers ahead for Puncheon, as the hosts’ midfield dominated the middle ground.

  • Rickie Lambert
    0
    2
    2.50

    Rickie Lambert

Playing alongside Ramirez, Lambert had the visitors’ first of few chances of getting his side on the scoresheet with a long-range effort that went just a couple of feet wide of Reina’s goal. Other than that, the attacker failed to offer any hope of getting his side back in the game.

Substitutions

    Steven Davis

Came on midway through the second-half and failed to offer a lifeline to Southampton.

  • Jay Rodriguez

    Jay Rodriguez

Southampton’s number nine arrived in the game with less than 15 minutes to play and only briefly offered any inspiration for a goal for the away side.
