Craig Gardner came on for the former Wigan midfielder is in line to replace his skipper in the centre midfield while Matt Kilgallon should take the place of the Republic of Ireland international at the back.
Harry Redknapp has almost a full squad to choose from in his first game in charge bar long-term absentees Andy Johnson (knee) and Bobby Zamora (thigh).
He will be boosted by the return to fitness of Park Ji-Sung although the South Korean may not be fit enough to start the game after recovering from a knee injury.
Elsewhere, Jose Bosingwa may push Stephane Mbia for a start after recovering from a virus while Shaun Derry may have done enough to keep hold of his place in the starting line-up ahead of Samba Diakite.
