Player Ratings: Norwich City 1-0 Manchester United

The Red Devils slipped to second place in the Premier League after Anthony Pilkington scored a second-half header to hand the Canaries a deserved three points at Carrow Road

    John Ruddy

Rarely called upon in the first half but made one superb save to deny Young from a corner. Claimed crosses flawlessly and preserved Norwich's lead at the death with a fine stop.

  • Steven Whittaker

    Steven Whittaker

Won his early battle with Young and the winger's influence diminished thereafter. Did not do much attacking, preferring to make sure the defence remained a secure unit. Won all of his headers when United started to fire crosses at the back post.

  • S. Bassong

    S. Bassong

Positioned himself well to watch out for the pace of Chicharito and made a couple of important flicked clearances from crosses. Another strong display in a partnership with Turner that is blossoming.

    Michael Turner

A rock at the back, repelling everything that came his way both aerially and on the deck. Chicharito's pace could have caused him problems but he ensured that the ball never found its way behind him into a dangerous position.

  • Javier Garrido

Javier Garrido Top of the Match

Confident enough to press Valencia right to the touchline and limited the Ecuadorian's influence very successfully. Even better when he went forward, drilling in one excellent cross that went untouched in the first half before curling a sublime delivery in to Pilkington for the opening goal.

  • Bradley Johnson

    Bradley Johnson

Norwich had their best spells of possession when he took control of the ball and encouraged the players around him to push on. While his team-mates were sometimes careless with their passing, he rarely gave the ball away.

  • Robert Snodgrass

    3.00

    Robert Snodgrass

Bright in spells, troubling Ferdinand with one run that ended in Holt's goalbound effort being blocked at the last moment by Smalling. Might have done more with the space often afforded by Evra.

  • Anthony Pilkington

    Anthony Pilkington

Had a very bright start, flashing one shot just wide, slipping in a superb pass for Garrido to cross and using the ball well when it was given to him. Faded in influence a little after that until he rose to head brilliantly beyond Lindegaard.

  • Wesley Hoolahan
    4
    1
    3.50

    Wesley Hoolahan

Always Norwich's most likely creator but he sometimes attempted to hold on to the ball too long and achieve too much when he would have been better served moving it on more quickly. Did play some penetrative passes, though, before he was subbed for Howson.

  • Alexander Tettey
    3
    1
    3.50

    Alexander Tettey

Uses his presence to break up play in central midfield but would have liked to have contributed more in an attacking sense. He should have taken advantage of one dreadful goal kick by Lindegaard but fluffed his lines. Stuck to his defensive duties in the second half, protecting the back four, and continues to look a real bargain.

  • Grant Holt

    Grant Holt

Sometimes isolated but worked extremely hard throughout and came close to opening the scoring only to be denied by Smalling. Chased after every ball that came in his direction and given a well-deserved rest when replaced by Morison.

Substitutions

  • Jonny Howson

    Jonny Howson

Should have scored when he broke free towards Lindegaard in the last few minutes after replacing Hoolahan.

  • Elliott Bennett

    Elliott Bennett

    A late replacement for Snodgrass.

  • Steve Morison

    Steve Morison

Relieved Holt of his lone-striker duties for the final minutes and was a threat on the break, flashing one cross just wide before setting Howson through on goal.

  • Anders Lindegaard

    2.00

    Anders Lindegaard

Could have been punished for a poor kick that went straight to Tettey and completely missed a free kick that he attempted to punch at one point. No chance with the goal, but not a particularly assured display.

  • Rafael

    6
    2.00

    Rafael

Had problems when Garrido overlapped down the left wing. Gave him too much space to drive a low ball across goal in the first half. The Spaniard then had the space to deliver the cross for Pilkington's opening goal.

  • Patrice Evra
    0
    6
    2.00

    Patrice Evra

Wanted to attack but often left gaping spaces behind him, which caused Ferdinand, whose pace is declining, issues. Did not achieve much when he did venture forward, either.

  • Rio Ferdinand
    1
    4
    2.50

    Rio Ferdinand

Stretched by the pace of the Norwich forwards at times. Snodgrass left him for dead on one occasion in a one-on-one situation. On the whole, though, he did not deal with Norwich's breaks too badly. Subbed as United threw on Anderson.

  • Chris Smalling
    1
    5
    3.00

    Chris Smalling

Made an important block to deny Holt a goal in the first half and generally kept Hoolahan and Holt at bay as the right-sided central defender.

  • Antonio Valencia

    8

Antonio Valencia Flop of the Match

Struggled to beat Garrido, who marked him tightly and ensured he did not have the space to whip in effective crosses. Did not track the full-back when he went forward, either. Subbed midway through the second half.

  • Ryan Giggs
    0
    14
    2.50

    Ryan Giggs

Showed his quality when he got on the ball, dinking one superb pass into the box that Van Persie might have taken advantage of, but off the ball the game too often passed him by. Needs someone else to do most of the defensive legwork.

  • Michael Carrick
    1
    6
    2.50

    Michael Carrick

Brought the ball out of defence and rarely gave it away but struggled to pick out the wingers in front of him because they were so tightly marked.

  • Ashley Young
    1
    5
    2.00

    Ashley Young

Involved in the first 20 minutes and might have scored from a corner if not for a superb save, but found it difficult to escape the attention of Whittaker and faded thereafter, just as was the case against Aston Villa. His confidence seems to dip when things do not start well.

  • Javier Hernández
    1
    6
    2.00

    Javier Hernández

Starved of service. Stayed on the last defender but had very little to feed on. Withdrawn in the second half.

  • Robin van Persie
    3
    5
    2.00

    Robin van Persie

Looked menacing early on in the No.10 position but Norwich marked him tightly. Began to look to get behind the defence instead and had some success, but could not take the chances that came his way.

Substitutions

  • Anderson
    1
    4

    Anderson

A late introduction for Ferdinand as United searched for an equaliser.

  • Paul Scholes
    3
    4

    Paul Scholes

Spread some more effective passes to the wide positions after coming on but United could not find the quality in the final third to make them count.

  • Danny Welbeck
    1
    5
    3.00

    Danny Welbeck

Used his pace and physicality to good effect after coming on and came as close as any United player when he headed just wide of the post.
