Player Ratings: Southampton 2-2 Fulham

A Jose Fonte double sandwiched a Jos Hooiveld own goal and Kieran Richardson finish as the Saints came from behind to grab a point at St Mary's

Punched well under pressure from a Duff corner and showed reliable hands from loose balls and a Baird header. Put enough pressure on Rodallega when in on goal to force the Colombian to prod wide and later made a fantastic reaction stop from the striker's close-range header. Could do nothing about the deflected equaliser.

    Maya Yoshida

Initially looked like struggling against Kacaniklic, especially after stumbling on one occasion. But he grew into the game and displayed a defensive awareness and an eye for a pass, clipping a deft ball over the Fulham defence for Rodriguez. Was fortunate to not only turn a Ruiz cross into his own net but then survive an appeal for a penalty with a handball on the line.

Got his head to an in-swinging corner to loop it over Schwarzer and into the far corner for the game's opener and offered a stern test for Rodallega throughout. Not without mistakes but largely made up for them with assured decision making. Headed into the ground and over the bar as Southampton chased a winner before finding the net again as he leapt above Hangeland to nod Fox's cross home.

Kept Duff quiet in the first period but was moore troubled in the second as Riether joined his team-mate in overloading his flank. The equalising goal developed from a clever move and Riether's cross. Despite seeing Riether tee up Richardson for what looked like the winner, Fox delivered the telling cross for Fonte's late second.

    Stretchered off after 7 minutes.

    Morgan Schneiderlin

Stuck close to Ruiz and won his fair share of challenges in the middle as they looked to deny Ruiz and Co. space in front of the Saints defence. Delivered a good cross to Lambert when he did get forward in the second-half in a steady performance, though his passing was often wayward.

    Steven Davis

Competed well alongside Schneiderlin and kept it simple, rather trusting Puncheon and Lallana to create for the hosts.

  • Adam Lallana

    Adam Lallana

Delivered the corner for the opener and gave Riether a tricky game. Slid a lovely ball through to Rodriguez and always looked a threat from the left, though he did fade a little in the second period as Riether pushed him further back.

  • Jason Puncheon

    Jason Puncheon

Tapped against the post from Hooiveld's flick-on before fouling Schwarzer in the build-up to his own goal moments later as he poked home Lambert's nod down. Was a constant threat and clipped a lovely ball to Lambert as well as generally posing the weaker of Fulham's two flanks problems in a busy first half. Was replaced on the hour by Richard Chaplow.

    Jay Rodriguez

Latched onto Lallana's through ball and squared accurately to Lambert who fired wide. Was a diligent runner and linked play well throughout, while also taking a number of whacks for his troubles. Had a good game on the balance of play.

  • Rickie Lambert

    Rickie Lambert

Began the match as he intended to go on as his back post header just drifted wide. He moved well to to find space for Rodriguez's cutback which he hit wide and later won another far post header but the goal was disallowed for a foul by Puncheon – the eventual scorer – on Schwarzer. Perhaps should have scored on the 40th minute but he was denied by a good stop by the Australian before being replaced by Guly Do Prado.

    Jos Hooiveld

Replaced Richardson after seven minutes. His flick-on almost led to a second goal as Puncheon tapped against the post. Booked for a trip out wide and was lucky to see Rodallega shoot wide when his mistake allowed the striker a free run in on goal. Didn't reassure the home fans at times and was the unlucky member of a leaky backline to deflect Riise's shot into his own net.

Replaced Lambert with 25 minutes to go and was an aerial presence but struggled to get on the ball.

    Richard Chaplow

Came on for Puncheon with 30 minutes to go to provide more bite to the midfield.

  • Mark Schwarzer

    Mark Schwarzer

Seemed reluctant to come for crosses in the early stages - Southampton's most potent weapon - and it put his side under pressure. Did make an excellent stop from Rickie Lambert who was free from ten yards out and largely went untroubled in the second half.

  • John Arne Riise

    John Arne Riise

His well-hit first-time shot from wide on the left was diverted into his own net by Hooiveld to provide the equaliser in an otherwise disappointing performance. He was regularly troubled by Puncheon's pace and trickery and much like last week appeared the chink in Fulham's armour.

  • Brede Hangeland

    Brede Hangeland

Competed well at the back but could do little to prevent his side getting overloaded on set-pieces. Forced a rebound back at goal on the hour only to see it hit the hand of Yoshida on the line, though nothing was given. Was beaten in the air by Fonte for the late equaliser.

  • Chris Baird

    Chris Baird

His flicked header flew just over the bar in the early stages and although he and Sidwell struggled at times, he remained on the field for the full 90. Was also caught in possession at times and his passing was patchy.

  • Aaron Hughes

    Aaron Hughes

Won more than expected aerially against Lambert and tested Gazzaniga with a firm header on the stroke of half-time. Did his best to deny the two Southampton forwards time and had a further battle on his hands when Do Prado entered the play.

  • Sascha Riether

    Sascha Riether

Struggled to deal with Lallana at times in the first period but threw caution to the wind in the second as he regularly piled forward in support of Duff. His crossing was impressive and his drilled low ball found its way to Riise who struck first time for the equaliser. Put in a big shift and was part of the reason for Fulham's revival – perfectly capped by another superb ball into the box that was finished by Richardson.

Steve Sidwell Flop of the Match

Pressured Yoshida into turning a Ruiz cross onto the far post as Fulham chased an equaliser but by and large disappointed in the middle. He was one-paced and was caught in possession far too often. Though his passing was accurate, his forward balls were not and he added little to the Fulham side.

  • Damien Duff

    Damien Duff

Got little joy in the first period but was much more productive in the second as Fulham chased the game. He linked well with Riether and made a number of intelligent runs in behind the Southampton defence.

  • Alexander Kacaniklic

    Alexander Kacaniklic

The highly-rated winger had a very disappointing game despite a bright start. He was willing to take on Yoshida in the opening stages until a resolute challenge knocked some confidence out of him. From there his contribution was poor and he faded out of the game until he was eventually replaced.

  • Bryan Ruiz

    Bryan Ruiz

He can be brilliant, as shown by his wonderful outside-of-the-boot pass to Riether before half-time but more often than not he was wasteful in the final third. Summed the team's first-half up in his lethargic play though his delivery from set-pieces was reliable and his in-swinger from the right was turned onto the post by Yoshida as Fulham chased an equaliser. That said, I would need more than ten fingers to count the number of times he was robbed of possession.

  • Hugo Rodallega

    Hugo Rodallega

Anonymous in the first-half. Did make a few clever runs but was never even considered an option by his lethargic team-mates. Did latch onto a Hooiveld mistake but could only prod wide as he was closed down by Gazzaniga. Saw a bit more of the ball in the second-half and was unlucky to be denied from close range by a fantastic save.

Substitutions

    Giorgos Karagounis

Replaced Sidwell with 20 to go and put in a good shift despite a damaged eye from an ugly collision in his own penalty box.

  • Kieran Richardson

    Kieran Richardson

Came on for Kacaniklic and added energy to a sometimes slow midfield. Got on the end of another good Riether cross but blazed over Gazzaniga's crossbar. But he kept at it and had the instinct to find room again to grab what looked like a late winner for the visitors.
