Player Ratings: Reading 1-3 Tottenham

Jermain Defoe was Spurs' star at the Madejski Stadium as two goals, which should have been three, gave Andre Villas-Boas' men their first victory of the Premier League season

Made a good early double save and could do nothing about the goal, but a bad error gifted Spurs a golden chance for a second in the first-half, which he was lucky they did not take.

Dealt with Bale fairly well early on but struggled when Spurs' front men swapped positions.

Unlucky to be penalised for a push when attacking a free-kick which Walker handled. Made a fine block off the line to deny the visitors a second in the first period.

Mishit a few long balls from the back, but looked dangerous when attacking set-pieces. Blocked a Lennon cross, which nearly resulted in an own goal, but probably stopped a Spurs one. Partially at fault for Defoe's second.

Ian Harte Flop of the Match

The veteran left-back had a bit of a stinker. He wasted numerous positions with long balls and free-kicks, from which Reading had the best chance of scoring. Gifted the opponents a fantastic chance for a second with a poor touch, too.

Made some decent blocks in the first-half, but offered little when Reading had the ball. Was replaced at the break.

Had a decent game in the centre of midfield, where Reading were over-run. Fought to get his side back in the game after the break.

    Garath McCleary

Looked the hosts' most dangerous player when running at Naughton, and also tracked back well to help out his defence.

Slow to get forward at times, leaving Pogrebnyak isolated. Suffered a knock with 20 minutes left.

    Pavel Pogrebnyak

The big man won a number of headers, and looked dangerous with the ball at his feet at times as well. Could have added more if the quality of delivery was better, which is of course not his own fault.

On at half-time and certainly offered something more in behind the Tottenham defence. His runs won his side a few corners, from which they looked threatening.

    Brad Friedel

A very quiet day at the office for the American, who had little to do. Worth noting he did nothing wrong, though, meaning Lloris could be in for more time on the bench.

  • Jan Vertonghen

    Jan Vertonghen

The Belgian defender looked incredibly comfortable on the ball, and defended pretty solidly as well. Although he was beaten by Pogrebnyak for the first ball on a number of occasions, he very rarely didn't make up for it.

  • William Gallas

    William Gallas

Solid game from the Frenchman, who formed an almost watertight partnership with Vertonghen. There was one moment of worry when passing the ball out of the defence though. Blocked a late Reading chance on the line.

  • Kyle Naughton

    Kyle Naughton

Struggled at times up against the tricky McCleary, but was without problems in the second half and made some good defensive blocks.

  • Kyle Walker

    Kyle Walker

Lucky to not give away a penalty early on when he handled in the area, but was pushed. Made a very good tackle to deny Reading a perfect second-half start, then did well to set-up Bale's goal.

  • Aaron Lennon

    Aaron Lennon

Made himself a real nuisance on the right in a very good, but also frustrating performance. He did well to set-up the first goal, and continued to get into dangerous areas, but more often than not lacked the final ball.

  • Gareth Bale

    Gareth Bale

Provided a good delivery for an early chance and was part of a fluid attack that changed position and linked well. The Welshman saw one shot go narrowly wide in the second-half, before finding the net with a right-foot finish.

  • Moussa Dembele

    Moussa Dembele

Glided forward as and when he wanted but some of his passing from deep was sloppy - he conceded a throw-in on one occasion and Reading nearly capitalised from the quick attack.

  • Gylfi Sigurdsson

    Gylfi Sigurdsson

The former Reading man saw a good header saved early on, before his beautiful ball to Lennon started the move for the first goal. He should have scored himself but his effort was blocked on the line.

    Sandro

Comfortable in the centre of midfield, and kept things ticking over. Was never really tested defensively.

Jermain Defoe Top of the Match

A sterling performance from the England man, who again proved his finishing capabilities. He popped up in typical style for the first goal with a neat first-time finish and should have had a brilliant second soon after, but spooned his finish after an exquisite touch. Nearly turned provider when setting-up Sigurdsson, who somehow did not score, but grabbed his second in the second-half with a superb run and finish.
