The first clear opportunity fell for the Singapore team but the post was to deny them in the 7th minute as a ball from the midfield sparked a chasing game between the goalkeeper, Joost Meendering, and Singapore captain, Adam Swandi.
Singapore’s bench was on their feet as Adam managed to hit the ball beyond the goalkeeper but luck was not on their side as the ball trickled just inches wide off the post.
It was Ajax's turn to hit on the offensive in the 12th minute as Ezra Walian’s trickery turned the Singapore’s defence inside out and a challenge by the Singapore defence in the penalty box left the referee with little choice but to point to the penalty spot.
It was Singapore turn to thank their lucky star as Ezra’s shot from the spot struck the foot of goalkeeper Heirul Suhanes left post.
The best chance on goal in the first-half came on the 17th minute through Azhar but his header was punched away and the follow-up by Rashe Rahman was brilliantly tipped over the bar by Meendering.
Walian finally got the ball into the back of the net barely a minute after the start of the second-half as he calmly controlled the ball in the penalty box before slotting past the Singapore custodian to give Ajax the lead.
Singapore was awarded a penalty in the 55th minute as Walian turned from hero to villain, being judged to have brought down Aaravin in the penalty box.
It was all even from the ensuing kick as Mahathir sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to bring loud cheers and roars from the Singapore fans in the stand.
That was not the end for Singapore, however, as Zulfadmi Suzliman snatched a winner two minutes from the end of regulation time, beautifully tucking the ball to the goalkeeper’s left from a tight angle from the right of the penalty box.
Ajax Amsterdam though won the compulsory sudden death penalty shootout at the end of the game to earn an advantage in the case of a tie.
