The match was tipped to be a close affair from kick off but it was Perak who showed great initiative early on.
Shahrulnizam Mustapha found himself unmarked in midfield and attempted to penetrate the ATM defence, but was fouled by Aidil Zafuan at the edge of the box. Michal Kubala stepped up to take the free kick and the Slovakian midfielder curled in a beauty into the top corner to give Perak a terrific early lead in the 3rd minute.
Kubala could have doubled the lead, but his long range shot was parried away by the goalkeeper in the 9th minute, before Atm's Fitro Omar missed the chance to restore parity, with his header being saved by Nasril Nourdin.
Argentinean midfielder Bruno Marteloto came close with another shot outside the box, but it grazed slightly over the bar. Syafiq Jamal then missed a sitter right in front of goal, after being picked out brilliantly by Fahrul Razi. However, his tame finish was gathered easily by ATM's keeper, as the score remained in favour of Perak at half-time.
ATM began the second half firing on all cylinders as they attempted to force a comeback. However, B. Sathianathan's men were guilty of wasting chances upfront. Zaquan Adha looked a lacksture presence upfront, with ATM missing the predatory instincts of Marlon Alex James, who sat out of this clash because of an injury.
Venice Elphi floated in a terrific cross in the 70th minute, but it missed the heads of all ATM players in the box, much to the dismay of Sathianathan on the sidelines. Minutes later, Marteloto's shot skimmed over the bar agonizingly as they began to grow frustrated.
Towards the end, the match opened up significantly as ATM began to push forward desperately in search of that vital equalizer. Perak though, were solid at the back and could have snatched a late second after a counter-attack put Popovic in a brilliant position only to have his shot tipped away to safety by the goalkeeper.
The score remained despite a late onslaught from ATM as Perak marched into the second round in style.
