SAF FC 2-1 Woodlands Wellington: Warriors edge Rams in tight encounter
SAFFC got back to winning ways as Shukor Zailan and Mislav Karoglan scored in each half to earn the Warriors three points against Woodlands Wellington
By Muhd Khalis Rifhan
SAFFC got back to winning ways as they climbed out from their recent slump of three consecutive defeats in the S.League as Shukor Zailan and Mislav Karoglan scored a goal in each half and secured all three points for the eight-time S.League champions.
With captain Daniel Bennett rested for the game having just returned from international duties, Bok opted for Eddie Chang and Bah Mamadou in the centre of defence and Ruzaini Zainal and Zulfadli Zainal on the flanks.
SAFFC was let off the hook early on in the game as a lively 23-year-old Oswind Suriya broke away easily from Bah Mamadou and advanced into the penalty box. Oswind unselfishly cut the ball across to the unmarked Goh Swee Swee but with only the goalkeeper to beat, the midfielder sent his shot sky high.
Bah, who had a bandage wrapped around his knee, was caught out of position in the17th minute as he let Moon Soon Ho run past him. Fortunately for the home side, the Korean shot straight into the hands of Shahril Jantan.
Although the Warriors were dominating possession, it was the Rams that were proving to be dangerous in their attack as midway through the half, Shamsurin knocked down the ball to Goh who set himself up with a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper but Shahril did well to palm the shot away.
But in football, it’s the goal that matters and SAFFC took their chance nine minutes before the end of the first half through Shukor.
Croatian Marin Jonjic, standing in for injured compatriot Marin Vidosevic, cleverly laid the ball to Shukor in the middle of the field and the latter took an adventurous first timer that flew beyond the helpless Ahmadulhaq Che Omar to the top corner
It was all over for the visitors twenty minutes from time as a well-crafted attack started by Jonjic down the right was rounded off with Tatsuro Inui sending the ball into the box and Karoglan heading it into the back of the net.
Moon was to grab a consolation goal in the 81st minute but it was too little too late as the Warriors hung on to clinch victory.
