It was DPMM FC that started the stronger of the two teams as they wasted no time in showing their intention, going on the offensive as soon as the referee blew the whistle for kick-off.
Within a minute, the visitors registered the first shot on goal through Ivan Jerkovic, forcing a fingertip save from Tampines custodian Sasa Dreven.
Tampines Rovers almost hit the back of the net in the 8th minute after some nice footwork from Jamil Ali on the left flank.
Jamil, crossed to strike partner Aleksander Duric who was waiting in the penalty area. But the Stags captain was unable to connect for a proper shot from inside the six-yard box.
Although DPMM saw the bulk of possession, it was Tampines that were registering more shots on goal.
In the 23rd minute, a corner-kick by Jamil found Duric inside the penalty box again. The Singapore international managed to free himself from his marker and lay-off the ball for Imran Sahib who was loitering just outside the box.
Imran needed no invitation to unleash a thunderous shot on goal, but unfortunately for Tampines, Wardun Yusof was able to palm the ball away to safety.
Lady Luck was not with DPMM as they missed a glorious opportunity to take the lead late in the first-half.
Shahrazen Said, did well to find his younger brother, Adi Said, but his header cannoned off Drevin's left upright.
The second-half got off to a slow start and it looked to be heading towards a typical goalless game until Tampines were awarded a free-kick on the hour mark.
Gligor Gligorov played the ball into the penalty box from the left flank and debutant Sead Hadzibulic headed it goalwards. But he was not find a debut goal as the ball came off Wardun's leg before being hacked away by the DPMM defence.
Gligorov would finally find the back of the net in injury time as he reacted the fasted to meet a cross from
Duric. The solitary goal was enough to seal a precious win for the Stags who managed to cut the Bruneian side's lead at the top of the table.
