Kelantan showed their defending champion credentials with a resounding 3-0 win away from home at Darul Aman.
The away side were favourites prior to the clash and went in on high confidence knowing Kedah's recent struggle in front of goal. Both managers opted for a 4-4-2 system, with Norshahrul Idlan Talaha starting up front for Kelantan while Baddrol Bakhtiar returned for Kedah.
It was the Red Warriors that started the first half brightly but despite having the larger share of possession, the visitors struggled to create any meaningful chances. Mohammed Ghaddar came agonizingly close to breaking the deadlock in the 24th minute, however, his shot was wide of the Kedah goal.
Nonetheless, Kelantan took their deserved lead on 34 minutes after Norsharul was fouled inside the box by Mohd Fauzi Nan and Ghaddar stepped up to dispatch the penalty with ease.
Kedah could have restored parity just moments later, but Mohd Kyril Muhymeen's shot was somehow kept out by Khairul Fahmi Che Mat, despite seeing the Canaries' forward skip past him easily.
Both sides came back with intent after the break, as Kedah looked to stamp their authority in the match. Peter Butlers' decision to introduce Dennis Antwi mid-way through the second half was a turning moment as the Ghanaian flew into the stride easily.
He provided an assist for Norshahrul, before wrapping up the game in extra time with an easy third goal, capitalizing on Helmi Eliza's complacency in the Kedah goal. The defeat left the Canaries rueing their missed chances as their poor form infront of goal continued.
