Often deciding to punch when the ball came in his direction, the Argentinean didn't exude too much confidence in the early stages. Never forced into any telling saves but was perhaps lucky to keep his clean sheet as wayward finishing robbed the visitors of an equaliser.

  • Andrea Dossena

    Andrea Dossena

Given food for thought by the pace of Clyne down Southampton's right but dealt with attacks well on the whole. Should have probably kept his focus on his defensive duties, though, frustrating fans and team-mates with an array of disappointing deliveries.

  • Ondřej Čelůstka

    Ondřej Čelůstka

Forced out of the team recently but put in a solid display here as he limited the attacking threats of Southampton down the right. Able to get forward, as well, the full-back proved he is a more-than-capable replacement for Bardsley and Alonso.

    John O'Shea

One of the more experienced heads in Poyet's makeshift side and it showed on the pitch as he led by example at the back. Kept Vergini on track and gave Lallana and Lambert little chance to make their mark.

Not yet used to the hustle and bustle of the English game but didn't give Lambert an inch in their battles. Could be accused of the occasional sloppy pass but was largely solid at the back.

    Sebastian Larsson

Kept the visitors' defence on their toes with some dangerous set-pieces that his team-mates should have been doing more with. Often wandered out to the right-hand side in order to deliver deep crosses. One of Sunderland's better attacking outlets.

Craig Gardner Top of the Match

Happy to get on the ball and pull the strings more than most in midfield. Always desperate to get a shot away and did so in style to give the Black Cats the lead with a thunderous strike. Proved to be the match-winner.

    Emanuele Giaccherini

Industrious down the left flank and clearly loved the open space afforded to him at times by the Saints defence as he ran with the ball at feet. His only problem was his inability to lift his head, running into his own players and failing to spot the right pass at crucial points.

    Lee Cattermole

Useful when afforded space but would often play himself into trouble on more than one occasion by dithering on the ball. Caused sharp intakes of breath amongst home fans with a few of his full-blooded challenges.

  • Fabio Borini

    Fabio Borini

Posed Southampton problems with his direct running and was unlucky not to have been awarded a penalty after Shaw's lazy challenge. Constantly targeted by the visitors - a compliment but a painful one at that.

  • Ignacio Scocco

    Ignacio Scocco

Given a striking role but regularly took up wide positions, which restricted the chances he got in front of goal. Brought off in the second half having never had a whiff of goal.

Came on and could have wrapped the game up on a couple of occasions.

    Kelvin Davis

Wasn't given a single thing to do in the first half as his old outfit failed to muster an attempt on goal. Given little chance by Gardner's effort but didn't give his team-mates much confidence with some questionable distribution.

  • Nathaniel Clyne

    Nathaniel Clyne

Galloped up and down the flank all afternoon and proved a regular threat for the Black Cats' defence. Got in behind on several occasions and picked out team-mates well.

Picked up a yellow card in the first half for hacking down Borini after the Italian got away from him.The pace of Wickham and Borini often exposed his biggest flaw.

Luke Shaw Flop of the Match

Lucky not to concede a penalty in the opening half after his lazy challenge brought down Scocco. His poor clearance inadvertently set up Gardner for the opener and he was unable to atone with his late forays forward.

Sunderland forwards would have been looking forward to facing a defender known for his gaffs but the centre-back stood strong throughout and gave the home side little in the way of unnecessary advantages.

    Steven Davis

Booked for what looked a nasty challenge on Borini in the opening half. Tried to get the wheels rolling in the Saints' midfield but was often reduced to long-range efforts that flew wide.

  • James Ward-Prowse

    James Ward-Prowse

Had easily the best chance of the first half but fluffed his lines when teed up by Lambert. Didn't see a large amount of the ball and was replaced after the break as Southampton chased the game.

  • Adam Lallana

    Adam Lallana

Even his talent failed to light up proceedings as he probed down both wings in the first half but to no avail. Put wide when it looked easier to score and was subsequently replaced on what was an off-day for the England international.

  • Guilherme Do Prado

    Guilherme Do Prado

A rare start for the midfielder but he didn't take his chance to show Mauricio Pochettino his abilities. Confided to the middle of the park, the Brazilian was replaced by Rodriguez after a disappointing display.

  • Victor Wanyama

    Victor Wanyama

One of the stronger performances in the Southampton side. The former Celtic man constantly traveled from box to box, making important last-ditch challenges when the defence was nowhere to be seen.

  • Rickie Lambert

    Rickie Lambert

Would have been looking to prey on the inexperience of Vergini but the number of balls into the area - and the quality of them - varied, preventing the front man from challenging Sunderland's defence on a regular basis.

Came on late but could do little to change the game. Booked for a nasty challenge, too.
