Player Ratings: Tottenham 2-2 Hull City (8-7 pens)

Gylfi Sigurdsson opened the scoring with a goal-of-the-season contender but a Brad Friedel own goal gave the Tigers hope before Ahmed Elmohamady missed the crucial penalty

  • Brad Friedel

    2.50

    Brad Friedel

Was a spectator for the majority of the game until inexplicably pushing the Davies's cut-back into his own net when under little pressure. Could do nothing about Hull's second. Redeemed himself in the penalty shoot-out.

  • Kyle Walker

    Kyle Walker

Had Boyd and Graham with which to contend on the right-hand side but still commanded the flank as his own. Really impressive performance so soon after signing a new contract.

  • Jan Vertonghen

    Jan Vertonghen

Cool, calm and collected, a reassuring presence against the more aggressive Kaboul. Together they worked very well.

  • Kyle Naughton

    Kyle Naughton

Forced off with an injury just after the hour mark but will be pleased with his performance on the whole. Assured on the left-hand side.

  • Younes Kaboul
    7
    1
    3.50

    Younes Kaboul

His first start in a number of weeks as he continues to struggle with a return to fitness but showed no signs of strain as he marshalled the back line as captain and played 120 minutes.

  • Paulinho
    7
    1
    3.50

    Paulinho

A dominant performance, especially in the first half. Made Tottenham tick and regain their composure when dispossessed. Still running at the final whistle.

  • Mousa Dembélé

    Mousa Dembélé

Seems to really enjoy playing alongside the marauding Paulinho. They both took turns when it came to defending and attack, combining effortlessly.

  • Christian Eriksen

    4
    2.50

    Christian Eriksen

Made a number of neat passes and runs from deep but, more often than not, failed to find Defoe with the final ball.

  • Gylfi Sigurdsson

Gylfi Sigurdsson Top of the Match

Put Spurs ahead with a goal-of-the-season contender after 17 minutes, turning two defenders with sublime ease before hitting a sumptuous half-volley from the edge of the area. Was always looking for the ball, definitely the hosts' biggest threat.

  • Erik Lamela
    8
    5
    3.00

    Erik Lamela

Extremely lively, always open for the ball and willing to receive, but was too often forced back by a Hull side strong in the tackle. Seemed to fare much better when the visitors tired in extra time and looked the best that he has been since joining Spurs.

  • Jermain Defoe
    1
    6
    2.50

    Jermain Defoe

Perhaps struggling for scraps with the majority of the game taking place in the midfield but was more than willing to venture deeper in search of the ball.

Substitutions

    Vlad Iulian Chiricheş

Came on for Naughton and was impressive, again, in an unfamiliar full-back role. However, was at fault for Hull's second goal, allowing McShane far too much time inside the area to head home.

  • Nacer Chadli
    1
    1

    Nacer Chadli

Lasted just nine minutes after coming on as a substitute and then going off clutching his left knee.

  • Harry Kane

    3.50

    Harry Kane

Nearly won the game for Spurs in the final minute of added time soon after coming on and then equalised with a lovely turn and finish. Will be delighted with his performance.

  • Eldin Jakupovic
    1
    0
    3.00

    Eldin Jakupovic

Could do nothing about Sigurdsson's opener and otherwise coped well in his first start of the season as Tottenham struggled to test him throughout.

  • Liam Rosenior
    1
    0
    3.00

    Liam Rosenior

Completely outfoxed for Tottneham's first goal but regained his composure and was often the first man on Defoe.

  • Alex Bruce

    2.00

    Alex Bruce

Withdrawn after just half an hour. Could do little about Sigurdsson’s opener but was often found wanting by Eriksen and Defoe’s movement.

  • Curtis Davies
    1
    0
    3.00

    Curtis Davies

Could have done better with handling Sigurdsson, despite the neat flick from the Spurs man, but otherwise kept Eriksen quiet.

  • Paul McShane

    0
    3.50

    Paul McShane

Made life difficult for Tottenham, with the hosts frustrated as the game entered its final stages. Netted what threatened to be the winner with a towering header.

  • David Meyler

    2.00

    David Meyler

Not the most impressive of performances as he struggled with Paulinho and Dembele all game.

  • Ahmed El Mohamady

    Ahmed El Mohamady

Was very lively in the first half and could well have equalised soon after Hull went behind, only for Kaboul to pull off a superb last-gasp challenge, with Friedel planted to the spot. Faded from then on and missed the decisive penalty.

  • Stephen Quinn

    Stephen Quinn

Very lively early doors but faded quickly. Picked up again after the break but struggled to assert himself from then on. Was often beaten to the ball by Walker.

  • Robert Koren

    3.50

    Robert Koren

Was a tad quiet at times in the first half but, along with his team-mates, seemed to get a second wind from Hull's equaliser. Was key to their extra-time display as he kept Dembele quiet and fed Boyd.

  • George Boyd

    George Boyd

Worked hard for his team and was particularly impressive when linking midfield and attack late on in the game.

  • Danny Graham

Danny Graham Flop of the Match

Missed a glorious opportunity to break the deadlock inside five minutes, with only the offside flag saving his blushes. Battled hard with Kaboul from then on, often losing, before being withdrawn at half-time.

Substitutions

  • Gedo

    Gedo

A late second-half substitution. Had one chance in the second half of extra time but was otherwise fairly anonymous.

  • Aaron Mclean

    Aaron Mclean

Came on at half-time and nearly scored with his first touch. Hurried and harried and helped drag away defenders for Hull's fortunate equaliser but was otherwise fairly ineffectual.

  • Nick Proschwitz

    Nick Proschwitz

Came on for Bruce after 33 minutes but struggled out of position, albeit his effort was not lacking.
