After a finely balanced 2-2 draw in the first leg semi-final at Queenstown stadium on Monday, both Global FC and Tanjong Pagar United were confident of getting a result at the Jalan Besar Stadium to reach the final of the Singapore Cup.

But it was the Jaguars that came out on top thanks to Moroccan international Monsef Zerka, whose brace helped to see out the Philippines side by the slightest of margins on Friday night.

The first leg saw them come back from a goal down to lead 2-1, but then they were undone by a goalkeeping error to allow Global to equalise. This time, however, the Jaguars managed to cling on to victory despite late pressure from Global.

While Global scored an early goal in the first leg, it was Tanjong Pagar that got the early goal this time. They couldn’t have asked for a better start when Monsef Zerka gave them the lead after only three minutes, heading in from close range.

Global were stunned by the early goal, but soon recovered to try and force their way into the game. In the 13th minute, the impressive Rufinho Sanchez hit a left-footed drive from outside the box, but the ball went wide.

The Philippines team then stepped up a gear to try to get an equaliser, but they struggled to create clear-cut chances. Set piece specialist Jeffrey Christaens tried his luck from a free-kick but failed to hit the target.

In the 24th minute, a good passage of play resulted in Paul Mulders finding Christaens in the box, but he only managed to shoot straight at Jaguars goalkeeper Aurelien Herisson.

Winger Asraf Rashid then had a golden opportunity to double his team’s lead when he broke free down the left, but he miscued his shot and hit the ball well over the bar.

Global soon had another chance in the half hour mark when Joshua Beloya had a free header from a corner kick, but he mistimed his header and headed over.

Kamel Ramdani had an excellent opportunity for the Jaguars just before the break when he was put through on goal, but he shot straight at goalkeeper Roland Sadia.

The Jaguars then wasted another good chance early in the second half when John Wilkinson crossed a perfect ball to Walid Lounis for a free header, but the defender directed it just wide.

Fortunately, the Jaguars were not made to pay for their profligacy as they soon got a penalty on the hour mark after Jason De Jong fouled Ismael Benahmed. Zerka made no mistake from the spot, sending Sadia the wrong way.

In the 72nd minute, Global got a lifeline when Zerka scored an own goal to complete his "hat-trick". The forward attempted to clear the ball from a corner, but he got it all wrong as it steered into his own net.

The goal gave Global a glimmer of hope, and they started pressing to get the equaliser. But their best chance fell to substitute Marwin Angeles, whose shot went narrowly wide across the frame of the goal.

In the end, the Jaguars managed to run down the clock and will now face the winners of the other semi-final game between Home United and Balestier Khalsa.
