Orlando Pirates 1-1 Platinum Stars: Bucs drop more points

Orlando Pirates were held to a 1-1 draw by Platinum Stars in an Absa Premiership clash played at Orlando Stadium on Saturday afternoon

Orlando Pirates were out to make it a league double over Platinum Stars, while their visitors on the day were looking to bounce back from a shocking 4-1 defeat to bottom placed Lamontville Golden Arrows.

The home side saw more of the ball in the opening stages. Bucs speedy winger Tlou Segolela forced a corner-kick in the fifth minute, which was easily dealt with by the Stars defence.

The former Bafana Bafana player got the first shot on goal from 20-yards out in the 11th minute, but his attempt was deflected out for a corner-kick.

Two minutes later, Stars forward Mogakolodi Ngele fired a 25-yard free-kick, which went straight at Bucs goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa who easily saved it.

Pirates continued to dominate ball possession. However, Bucs were not creating obvious goalscoring opportunities in the final third as the Stars defence stood firm.

Bucs striker Kermit Erasmus took a powerful shot from the edge of the Stars box in the 25th minute. The 23-year old was just unfortunate as his attempt sailed over Stars keeper Siyabonga Mpontshane's goal posts.

The away side surprisingly broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute. Dikwena striker Siphelele Mthembu headed home a corner-kick, to make it 1-0 to Stars.

Stars managed to hold on to their lead until half-time, as Pirates could not break down the Dikwena defence marshaled by captain Vuyo Mere.

Bucs winger Segolela forced keeper Mpontshane into a good save, two minutes into the second-half. The Moletjie-born player was able to turn brilliantly on the edge of the Stars box and shoot at goal.

The Buccaneers were dominating the opening stages once again. Bafana Bafana defender Siyabonga Sangweni headed a well taken free-kick inches wide of the goal posts in the 52nd minute.

Pirates coach Vladimir Vermezovic could only watch in disbelief three minutes before the hour mark, as winger Daine Klate fired a tame shot at Stars keeper Mpontshane from close range, who easily collected it.

The equalizing goal finally came on the hour mark. Bucs substitute Lennox Bacela bounced onto a loose ball inside a crowded Stars penalty box, and made it 1-1.

Pirates winger Klate's well taken set-piece was met by his ageing captain, Lucky Lekgwathi in the 68th minute.

The 37-year old former Ria Stars defender found himself unmarked inside the Stars box, but his header went over the cross-bar with keeper Mpontshane rooted to the ground.

Bucs continued to dominate the match, with defender Sangweni heading wide another good cross in the 80th minute. From Pirates set-piece specialist Klate, who was dishing out good balls into the Dikwena box.

Stars' penalty appeal was waved away by the referee after Dikwena forward Mduduzi Nyanda went down tumbling under a challenge from Bucs defender Happy Jele, eight minutes before the 90th minute.

Pirates wing-back Thabo Matlaba's long range effort was brilliantly saved by Dikwena keeper Mpontshane in the 85 minute, as Stars held on for a 1-1 draw away from home.

It ended 1-1, and Pirates moved to position five, while Stars remained on position nine on the Absa Premiership standings.
