Orlando Pirates 2-3 Bloemfontein Celtic: Phunya Sele Sele stun Bucs in five-goal thriller

Orlando Pirates remained at the bottom of the PSL log following their 3-2 defeat to Bloemfontein Celtic in a match played at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday night

Bloemfontein Celtic took the game to Orlando Pirates as early as in the 6th minute when they won the free-kick outside the box after debutant Mbongeni Gumede had fouled Mhango.

Vuyani Ntanga stepped up to strike the free-kick which nearly troubled Senzo Meyiwa, and Letlabika couldn’t hit the target from the rebound in what should have easily been Celtic’s first goal of the night.

Pirates then started dictating the midfield with their passing game, and they won their own free-kick in the 13th minute after a foul on Kermit Erasmus, but Daine Klate’s effort was deflected for a corner.

Musa Nyatama wasted a glorious chance to put the visitors in front in the 23rd minute after he was well picked by Ntanga, but he guided his shot wide of Meyiwa’s goal.

Celtic wasted another great chance to take the lead in the 28th minute when Letlabika failed to hit the target with only Meyiwa to beat after a great combination with Nyatamba.

Lerato Manzini should have made it 1-0 to Celtic in the 32nd minute, but like Nyatama and Letlabika, the Phunya Sele Sele forward directed his shot wide of goal.

Pirates were struggling to deal with the Celtic’s attackers and often couldn’t enjoy the freedom going forward, as Celtic put enough bodies behind the ball which forced the Soweto giants to shoot from range.

Celtic deservedly took the lead with a well struck volley from Vuyani Ntanga in the 39th minute to the delight of the visitors’ fans in the stands.

Pirates looked for a quick comeback, as Erasmus tried his luck from the edge of the Celtic box, but Patrick Tinyemb was well positioned to make a fine save.

The home side started the second half with more intent, and had a few chances of their own in the opening minutes, but the equalizer came in the 55th minute from Lennox Bacela who netted his first league goal of the season against his old club.

Ntanga created space for himself in the Pirates’ half in the 64th minute, but he ballooned his shot well wide before making way for Lyle Lakay.

Siwelele restored their lead two minutes later through their captain Thabo Nthethe who swept Letlabika’s cross home with Meyiwa in no man’s land.

Nyatama did well to get past the Pirates defence with less than 15 minutes remaining on the clock, but his back heel at the end of it, was not good enough to beat Meyiwa as it hit the wrong side of the net.

Mhango should have put the game to bed in the 84th minute after some defending errors from Bucs, but he blasted his shot way over the bar.

Lerato Lamola should have done better from the edge of the box in the 86th minute, but he couldn’t hit the target.

Celtic then won a penalty in the 88th minute, and it was none other than Musa Nyatama who stepped up to send Meyiwa the wrong way.

Pirates won their own penalty a deep in stoppage time after Collins Mbesuma was brought down inside the Celtic’s box and it was Andile Jali who easily made it 3-2.

However, the damage was already done as Celtic walked away victorious at the Orlando Stadium while Pirates remained rooted at the bottom of the PSL log.
