Rooi Mahamutsa’s second half strike was the difference as Pirates beat Polokwane City 1-0 at the Orlando Stadium on Wednesday night

Orlando Pirates got off to a flier and nearly opened the scoring inside the first two minutes when Aubrey Ngoma’s shot was blocked by Thapelo Tshilo before Oupa Manyisa sent his shot over the bar.

Pirates did not do enough to threaten their opponents, as they often shot from range without success although they clearly dominated possession.

Tlou Segolela came close in the 25th minute, but his well taken shot from distance was deflected by Tlou Molekwane for a corner.

Pirates were all over Polokwane City and should have punished them towards the half-hour mark, but the City defence eventually cleared their lines.

On 33 minutes Andile Jali caught Modiri Marumo with a deflected shot, but the City keeper was fortunate, as the ball went wide of goal for Pirates corner.

Siphesihle Nzimande took a shot from the right hand side of the pitch, and it nearly caught Senzo Meyiwa napping, but the Pirates keeper had a slight touch on it as he conceded a corner.

Nzimande tried his luck again from range with five minutes to go to halftime, but Meyiwa collected easily this time around.

Polokwane City started to gain confidence going forward, and Thobani Mngcwango’s left-footed rocket from inside the Pirates box was blocked by Meyiwa, as the score remained 0-0 at halftime.

Pirates continued to dictate the game at the start of the second half, but they couldn’t get past the Polokwane City defence.

Segolela was brought down by Mkhabela in the City penalty area, but the referee Thabo Nkosi awarded a corner to Pirates.

The home side should have taken the lead from the resultant corner kick, but the Pirates’ header was cleared off the line with Marumo clearly out of position.

Pirates finally broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute after a brilliantly taken shot by Rooi Mahamutsa from outside the box beat Marumo to the delight of Pirates fans.

Marumo did well to tip Thulasizwe Mbuyane’s deflected shot over the bar as Pirates looked very much in control and likely to put the game to bed.

Polokwane City’s best chance of the half came in the 70th minute after Kagiso Senamela whipped his cross across the face of Pirates’ goal, but the ball was too far for Mngcwango to convert.

Both teams didn’t look like scoring in the last few minutes of the game although Pirates continued to have a lion's share of possession.

Mbuyane and Gabuza had their shots saved by Marumo in the 90th minute, and the visitors tried to react immediately, but the damage was already done as Pirates picked up their first points of the season leaving City winless in five games.
