Jaguars through to semis after see-saw thriller against Sparks

The S.League high-flyers took the lead twice after falling behind but their nine-man Filipino opponents fought back on both occasions, although it was not enough for progress

Tanjong Pagar United advanced to the RHB Singapore Cup semi-finals after overcoming a gutsy Loyola Meralco Sparks in the second leg of the quarters, drawing 3-3 on the night to sneak through 5-4 on aggregate.

The Philippines outfit put up a brave display, scoring the first goal of the match and not letting their game down even though they ended the match with nine men.

Park Min Ho was given his marching orders after his lunging tackle on Monsef Zerka earned him his second yellow card of the night from referee Sukhbir Singh in the final minute of first half injury time, while Jang Jo Won was shown a straight red four minutes before the end for a very poor challenge on Sazali Salleh.

The final 15 minutes before half-time saw Vincent Santos' charges raise their tempo and score the opener in the 37th minute, following a nice interchange of passes between Park, James Younghusband and Jang.

The move culminated with Jang flicking a perfect pass to Park inside the penalty box and the Jaguars defence could only watch on as the latter’s effort trickled into the bottom corner.

But the game soon turned out to be a nightmare for Sparks as their opponents first clawed back into the game, before they wound up going into the break a man down after Park's second yellow.

Marquee signing Zerka started the attack down the middle before laying the ball off to Kamel Ramdani on the left flank, who then dinked in a lovely ball to the far post where Ismael Benahmed met it with a firm downward header to make it one apiece in the 45th minute.

The Jaguars added their second of the night after the restart courtesy of Singapore international Hafiz Nor, who slammed the ball home from close range in the 56th minute.

But that goal did not dampen the Sparks' spirits as they continued their offensive and found the equaliser in the 69th minute, James squaring a cross to the middle of the penalty box for Jang to smash home.

Their defence was then caught ball-watching when Ramdani was allowed to nod home Hafiz's corner for a 3-2 lead in the 75th minute to seemingly kill off the Sparks resistance.

Needing two goals to force extra time, it looked like it was game over for the visitors when Jang's straight red left them with nine men in the 86th minute.

But Chad Gould popped up with a stooping header off Philip Younghusband's freekick deep into injury time to force a draw, and while that was not enough for them to progress, they can be proud of their efforts in fighting back.
