    Keiren Westwood

Looked inspired by his teammates' endeavours outfield and made a string of stunning saves to thwart United's all-star frontline but was undone by Januzaj's brilliance.

Ondřej Čelůstka Flop of the Match

Was pinpointed by United as a weak link and needed the help of Giaccherini to deal with Januzaj's trickery and Evra's overlapping runs. Was nowhere to be seen for both goals, losing the French left-back and the matchwinner. It proved costly.

  • John O'Shea

    John O'Shea

The captain led by example, cajoling his fellow defenders by ordering them into position and keeping their offside trap in shape. But his weak header was thrashed home by Januzaj to punish the former United man's only real mistake.

  • Valentin Roberge

    3.00

    Valentin Roberge

Hasn't been afforded too many first-team opportunities but revelled in his side's first-half display. Could do little to prevent either of Januzaj's excellently-taken goals.

  • Sung-Yong Ki

    2.50

    Sung-Yong Ki

Struggled to get into the game at stages but was neat on the ball and showed a good engine in midfield when United had possession.

  • Craig Gardner

    Craig Gardner

Took his goal with aplomb and his early contribution set the tone for an all-action midfield display. Got in United's faces and wasn't afraid to stick a foot in to retrieve possession.

  • Adam Johnson

    Adam Johnson

A hit and miss display. Showed some wonderful trickery and pace down the wing but his final delivery was not always of the required quality.

  • Jack Colback

    Jack Colback

Worked tirelessly at left-back and showed a willingness to join in with his side's ferocious counter attacks. Nani looked to move inside after becoming frustrated with the local lad's defensive nous.

  • Emanuele Giaccherini

    Emanuele Giaccherini

Outstanding performance in the opening period. Was instrumental in the build-up to the opening goal and was efficient both with the ball and without but faded in the second period.

  • Lee Cattermole

    Lee Cattermole

Another battling cameo from a player who looks revitalised under Kevin Ball. Kept it simple when he received the ball and looked to take up a wise position in front of his defence to shackle the visitors. Sadly, failed to track Januzaj's evading run.

  • Jozy Altidore

    Jozy Altidore

Jones and Vidic looked scared to approach the physical frontman, who barged them away with ease in the opening exchanges when they did. Showed good link-up play and chased a number of lost causes to help his side defend from the front but grew tired as United began to dictate.

Substitutions

  • Sebastian Larsson

    Sebastian Larsson

Came on to rally his side's midfield troops but despite his attacking presence in central areas, he could not have a telling impact.

  • Connor Wickham

    Connor Wickham

Thrown on as Ball stepped up the search for goals but United had moved into the ascendency and he struggled to get a foothold of the ball.

  • Dong-Won Ji

    Dong-Won Ji

Hauled off the bench as a forward option but offered next to nothing from a slightly unorthodox left-wing position.

  • David de Gea

    3.00

    David de Gea

Was let down by those in front of him at times but helped ensure the Black Cats did not move out of sight in the first half. His save from Giaccherini, in particular, was vital and stunning in equal measure.

  • Rafael

    2.50

    Rafael

Struggled to contain a rampant Johnson and Giaccherini early on as the two interchanged at will. Never looked comfortable rampaging forward due to a wariness of the attacking threat left behind him.

  • Patrice Evra
    8
    4
    3.00

    Patrice Evra

Was badly at fault for the opener as he allowed Giaccherini to walk through too easily and his performance suffered as a result. Was a good attacking outlet, however, evident in his assist for the leveller.

  • Phil Jones

    7
    2.50

    Phil Jones

Was also involved in some woeful defensive play for the opener as his weak clearance rebounded for Gardner to tuck home. Nearly handed him a second too. Looked nervous throughout.

  • Nemanja Vidic
    5
    5
    2.50

    Nemanja Vidic

Appears a shadow of his former self at present having to line up alongside several different central defensive partners. Harsh to blame him completely for the opening goal but Altidore relished the tussle up front against the Serb. Showed authority and calmness to make a crucial late block.

  • Michael Carrick
    3
    9
    2.50

    Michael Carrick

Strangely subdued performance. Hesitant in possession at times and was not always on the same wavelength as his teammates. Looked bereft of confidence during the opening period.

  • Nani
    13
    2
    2.50

    Nani

Flattered to deceive on regular occasions. Showed an impressive array of tricks and flicks but with no end ball to boot. Did produce the cross for Januzaj's second in a rare moment of quality.

  • Tom Cleverley

    3
    3.00

    Tom Cleverley

Busy in midfield but needed to offer more of a penetrative threat to help support Rooney and the isolated Van Persie. Kept United ticking when they did have the ball, however.

Adnan Januzaj Top of the Match

The star of the show for United was the youngster making a first start for the club. Capped his performance with two outstanding finishes to save his side when all seemed lost.

  • Wayne Rooney

    2.50

    Wayne Rooney

Still has a way to go to reach his peak form and fitness despite his early-season form. Didn't offer Van Persie enough service and given his role in the side, was slightly disappointing.

  • Robin van Persie

    3
    3.00

    Robin van Persie

Cut a forlorn figure up front. His control at times was typically exquisite but could not provide a telling touch and became more and more irritated by resolute Sunderland defending. His below-par display was summed up by a poor late finish to make the game safe.

Substitutions

  • Chris Smalling

    Chris Smalling

Came on for the final minutes and barely touched the ball.

  • Antonio Valencia

Came on for the closing stages and gave United some pace and a fresh injection of energy down the right-hand side.

  • Danny Welbeck

    Danny Welbeck

Showed a maturity in his play when he emerged from the bench. Keeping things simple and testing the Sunderland defence when he saw fit.
