In-form Balestier Khalsa advanced to the semi-finals of the StarHub League Cup when they accounted for a formidable Tampines Rovers at Toa Payoh Stadium on Saturday night, emerging victorious only after the rigours of extra-time and penalties had decided the outcome.

There was little to choose between the two sides, with both teams contributing own goals in a pulsating 3-3 draw after 90 minutes.

When tired legs meant that little could be achieved in that additional 30 minutes, the game moved to kicks from the penalty mark.

While Tampines netted each of their first three shots, courtesy of Mustafic Fahrudin, Shahdan Sulaiman and Kunihiro Yamashita, and Qiu Li and Obadin Aikhena replied successfully for Balestier, a miss by the Tigers with their third kick via Park Kang Jin meant that the Stags appeared to have the edge.

But saves by Zaiful Nizam from the next two efforts by Ahmed Fahmie and Aleksandar Duric set it up for Balestier to take the spoils through deadly finishes from Tengku Mushadad and finally, inspirational captain Paul Cunningham.

The drama of the closing stages of the penalty-taking could have been avoided had both sides been more careful, but having come from a goal down twice to take the lead at 3-2, Tampines could simply not hang on and finally caved in as Zulkiffli Hassim beat Ridhuan Barudin with a grounder from just outside the box to make it 3-3.

The game had begun with a most unfortunate own goal from Ismadi Mukhtar, whose bullet-like header beat his own goalkeeper after one-time Tampines star Qiu had whipped in a telling cross from the left after only two minutes.

It wasn’t long however before evergreen striker Duric made it 1-1, his 8th-minute volley after a cross from the left giving his side something to build on.

But the Stags fell behind again in the 39th minute, Cunningham shrugging aside the presence of at least four Tampines defenders to lay the ball back in the path of Kim Min Ho.

The Korean lifted his shot from 25 yards over the head of Ridhuan and just under the crossbar to make it 2-1 to the home side.

Tampines half-time substitute Khairul Amri brought his side level a second time in the 67th when he chased a ball through from deep and beat the goalkeeper with a good striker’s finish.

The away side then took the lead 10 minutes later.

Jamil Ali, Shahdan, Duric and Amri all put pressure on the Balestier defence as they mowed their way through the middle and advanced to within six yards of goal.

Balestier defender Jaslee Hatta tried to impede their progress by sliding in, succeeding only in steering the ball past his own goalkeeper, thus giving the visitors the lead 3-2.

But three minutes later Balestier fought back when Zulkiffli found the net from 20 yards.

Extra time produced little of any consequence and thus it was penalties that decided the issue.
