Penalty woes for dominant Protectors in League Cup quarters

The uniformed giants controlled the vast majority of their game against the White Swans but paid for failing to finish their chances as they were eliminated on spot-kicks

Home United vs Albirex Niigata (S) - League Cup
Kuris
The Home United players must have been wondering where Lady Luck was on Saturday night. She certainly wasn’t at Bishan Stadium to see them dominate Albirex Niigata in their StarHub League Cup quarter-final, only to end up losing on penalties.

The home side’s failure to add to a first-half lead cost them when they conceded an equaliser 15 minutes from time. They still had the better chances in extra time but failed to break the 1-1 deadlock, and the fortunate Japanese triumphed 7-6 from the spot.

The visitors could have taken the lead after just 22 seconds when Bruno Castanheira was slipped through, but his tame left-footed effort was straight at Shahril Jantan. Thirty seconds later, the Home custodian watched a 25-yard drive from Kazuki Sakamoto drift past his left post.

The Protectors took a while to get into their stride but when they did, it resulted in the opening goal.

Jordan Webb tricked his way into the box from the left and got to the byline before pulling the ball across to the far post, where right-back Ismail Yunos gleefully converted into an empty net.

That sparked a concerted spell of pressure from Home, with Masrezwan Masturi slamming his shot from a tight angle onto the post after sidestepping Albirex goalkeeper Hiroaki Hara neatly, before the latter produced a superb reflex save to push away Lee Kwan Woo’s fierce curler from the edge of the box.

Webb then fizzed one not far wide of Hara’s upper left corner, as the Japanese side struggled to get their trademark passing game going.

Winger Firdaus Idros was a constant threat down the right and he nearly got a second when he took down another Webb cross and spun around to fire in one smooth movement, but the shot was well blocked.

Lee spurned another great chance in the 32nd minute after taking down a long ball and brilliantly turning his marker in the box, only to curl one just over from the right.

The uniformed giants were displaying utter dominance over their Japanese visitors and it would be no exaggeration to say that they should have been at least four goals up at half-time.

New signing Choi Jaewon made his debut for Home when he replaced the effervescent Firdaus at the interval, as the hosts continued after the restart the same manner they had left it.

Lee saw a direct attempt from a corner cleared off the line, as the 35-year-old former South Korean international dictating the game from midfield.  He twice played Webb into good positions with glorious passes, although the Canadian failed to capitalise.

However, the second goal was proving to be elusive. Masrezwan narrowly failed to get his head to Ismail’s superb cross, before his replacement Syahiran Miswan shot over after a gorgeous through ball from Hafiz Rahim.

Albirex made them pay for not scoring again in the 76th minute when Home captain Noh Rahman bundled over a player in the penalty area. Shingo Suzuki slammed home the spot-kick into the bottom right corner for an equaliser his side scarcely deserved.

The midfielder then nearly had a hand in a dramatic winner in the dying seconds when his 35-yard freekick was well tipped onto the bar by Shahril. Kento Fukuda was on hand to head home the rebound, but the offside flag ruled the goal out to send both sides into extra time.

It was Lee’s turn to see his set-piece pushed onto the bar by the goalkeeper in the 101st minute, as Aliff Shafaein replaced Syahiran to provide more attacking impetus.

Hafiz then smashed a close-range volley straight at Hara after Ismail’s long throw had found its way to him at the far post, to his own disbelief.

Lee went agonisingly close again with two minutes left in extra time, curling the ball a whisker past the post after Choi had laid it back for him from a cross, as both sides remained deadlocked to enter penalties.

With all 13 penalties before him successfully converted, it was goalscorer Ismail who was the unfortunate man to blink first as he crashed his spot-kick against the bar to send the Albirex players whirring away in delight, and his side to a cruel elimination.
