Luckless NFA U16s fail to make semis despite victory over Frankfurt

The home side finished bottom of their group on goal difference despite a hard-fought win in their final group match, as a late consolation for the Germans proved enough

They had to win by at least two clear goals, and backed by a vociferous home crowd, things looked promising when the NFA Under-16s raced into an early two-goal lead against Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday night at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

However, the spirited Cubs wound up failing to make the semi-finals by a hair’s breadth despite winning 2-1 in their final game of the 25th Canon Lion City Cup, as a late goal dashed their hopes.

The home side started like a house on fire as they sought the early goal and when it came, it was a familiar name who got on the scoresheet.

Receiving a ball 30 yards from goal, Irfan Fandi clipped a lovely pass over the Frankfurt left-back for winger Amiruldin Asraf to run on to. When the return cross came, the number 17 took a touch to control the bouncing ball before volleying neatly past Christian Seemann to send the crowd into frenzy.

The U16s did not let up and a bewildered Frankfurt did not know what hit them when they conceded again 10 minutes later.

A low cross from the left by Ariyan Shamsuddin was allowed to run through to Andin Azzie at the far post, who calmly controlled the ball before slamming it across Seemann and into the opposite corner.

It looked like the humidity and fatigue was affecting the German side, who had run themselves into the ground during their 4-3 victory over Arsenal on Monday.

Frankfurt thought they had one back when NFA goalkeeper Zharfan Rohaizad let a cross slip through his grasp, but it was ruled out after an offside Yves Mfumu was judged to have been interfering with play.

The Singapore side were coping well with the Frankfurt attack as they closed down their opponents quickly. Centreback Thaniyath Vishaal, who was making his first start in the tournament, was particularly impressive alongside Adam Hakeem.

Zharfan did his part on the occasion when his defenders came up short, doing brilliantly to deny Nils Herdt from point-blank after the striker got his head to a cross in the 61st minute.

Amiruldin Asraf had a golden chance to score a third in the 67th minute as he raced clear into the area, but scuffed his shot well over after pressure from three recovering defenders.

The U16s heaved a huge sigh of relief after substitute Lukas Rodwald somehow missed from a metre out with the goal gaping, before man-of-the-match Thaniyath made a brilliant last-ditch clearance to deny Frankfurt.

However, a momentary lapse on concentration saw the U15s get caught out in the dying minutes to devastating consequences.

A long ball over the top in the 79th was superbly taken down by Marvin Diehl, who then emphatically lashed his effort into the corner beyond a despairing Zharfan.

That proved enough to send both Frankfurt and Arsenal through to the semi-finals, as the Singapore boys were cruelly denied a spot due to them scoring only three goals versus the other two teams’ five, despite all three having the same goal difference.
