Singapore Under-23 coach V. Sundramoorthy has revealed that his charges will be heading into their friendly match against their Indonesian counterparts with all guns blazing as he seeks a good showing and a result to match.
The match is widely speculated to be a gauge of the team’s strength, which will determine whether they can get the nod from the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) and book a ticket to the year-end SEA Games in Naypidaw, Myanmar.
This is the second meeting between the two this year, with the first being a 1-1 draw in Solo, Indonesia a month ago.
Sundram, who is also the LionsXII head coach, has selected a team filled with players from the Malaysian Super League (MSL) champions, except for Afiq Yunos and Delwinder Singh, who turn out for Courts Young Lions and Geylang International respectively in the S.League.
With the MSL taking a month-long break during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadhan, Sundram has been dedicating his time to the U23s as he prepares them for this crucial clash with the Young Garuda.
There should be no surprise to Sundram’s starting eleven as he grouped the "possibles" together during their training session in the past week.
At the back, Singapore international Safuwan Baharudin is expected to team up with Afiq, while Faritz Hameed and Shakir Hamzah will slot in at the right-back and left-back positions respectively.
It will be a tight and disciplined set-up in the middle of the field as Sundram will be deploying a five-man team in an effort to suffocate the Indonesians from penetrating through the middle.
Hariss Harun and Izzdin Shafiq will provide the strength in the middle while Faris Ramli, Fazli Ayob and Aqhari Abdullah will supply the speed and ammunition into the box.
The responsibility for goals lies on the shoulder of Shahfiq Ghani, who has shown his awareness and prowess in the box during the MSL campaign.
As for the Indonesians, they will only be bringing 18 players to Singapore as several players are caught up with club duties.
The only notable name in Rahmad Darmawan's side is Persebaya's nifty midfielder Andik Vermansyah, who has a senior goal to his name against the Singapore national team.
Andik showcased his talent in during the recent AFF Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and scored the only goal in their match against the Lions in the group stage.
