Wigan demonstrated their Premier League quality to secure a 4-1 victory over Huddersfield the John Smith's Stadium and advance to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Callum McManaman opened the scoring for the visitors before a double from Arouna Kone and a strike from James McArthur secured their progression to the next stage despite Lee Novak's second-half consolation.

Roberto Martinez elected to rest first-team regulars such as James McCarthy and Shaun Maloney, with youngsters Roman Golobart, McManaman and Fraser Fyvie all handed starts. Alan Lee, meanwhile, led the line for Huddersfield ahead of James Vaughan and Novak.

McArthur dominated the middle of the park and orchestrated the opening goal by playing an elegant ball behind Jack Hunt for McManaman to run onto. The striker glided into the penalty area and fired past Terriers goalkeeper Alex Smithies to break the deadlock midway through the first half.

Wigan then doubled their lead before the half-time whistle with a close-range finish from Kone. The Ivorian tapped in after Smithies parried away Roger Espinoza's shot to leave the hosts facing a difficult second-half task.

McArthur continued his impressive display after the break by scoring Wigan's third goal. The midfielder received the ball on the edge of the penalty area and thumped a shot into the corner of the net as Smithies looked on in despair.

The home side were handed a lifeline when substitute Novak finished from close range. The hosts had looked much brighter during the second half but their revival was to prove short-lived.

Half-time changes from manager Mark Robins, who had also introduced Vaughan at the break, had added new dimensions to the Huddersfield attack but Wigan extinguished any hope of a late comeback with a fourth goal.

A terrible mistake by Anthony Gerrard presented the ball to Kone and the striker made no mistake, purposefully firing past Smithies from just inside the penalty area to seal their place in the last eight.
