Home United piled on the misery for Geylang International as they walked away with all three points at Bedok Stadium with a 3-1 win on Saturday night despite falling behind in the first half.
Goalkeeper Joey Sim made his first start for the Eagles, while the Protectors were still without the services of Indra Sahdan and Masato Fukui due to suspension.
The visitors were the quicker side to settle into the game, but it was Geylang who got the first clear-cut chance in the 6th minute when Home goalkeeper Shahril Jantan stopped a blistering long ball. Jozef Kaplan got onto the rebound but Shahril was once again up to the task, palming it away for a corner.
The referee then waved away the penalty protests as a clumsy challenge left Canadian Jordan Webb floored.
The home side then had another chance but once again, it was Shahril who came up tops as he got to the end of a goal-bound shot from range. Duncan Elias was the man who managed to foray forward, before deciding to try his luck from a good 25 yards out.
After a hat-trick of crucial saves, Shahril was finally beaten in the 31st minute as Geylang broke the deadlock.
It started with a Home attack breaking down, as Hafiz Rahim had a glorious chance to open the scoring but slipped at the vital moment after Firdaus Idros’ run down the wing.
The resulting counter-attack saw Yasir Hanapi carrying the ball just beyond the halfway line. Seeing no viable options for a pass, the 24-year-old then decided to take a shot from 35 yards that flew past Shahril and into the net.
Home started the second half as they did the first and this time, they managed to grab an equalizer.
Haphazard defending in the Geylang box saw a Lee Kwan Woo corner float into the net, although the goal was credited as an own goal by a Geylang player.
The Protectors took the lead in the 64th minute when 19-year-old Song Ui Young received a pass and maneuvered his way past Norihiro Kawakami before unleashing a shot beyond Joey Sim’s reach.
Song then switched roles from scorer to provider as he lofted a perfectly-weighted ball with laser-guided precision to put Webb on goal, who made no mistake from inside the box to give the visitors a commanding two-goal lead in the 74th minute.
That was enough for Home to register their second win of the season, which temporarily lifts them up to fourth in the table while Geylang stay at the second-last position.
