Goal.com runs the rule over the players on show at Soccer City in Johannesburg as the Super Eagles picked up a third continental crown at the Stallions' expense

By Mohammed Ali

  • Vincent Enyeama

    Vincent Enyeama

A rather quiet enough game from the Super Eagles goalkeeper. Did his duties well, but wasn’t tested nearly as much as expected before saving brilliantly from Sanou in the 72nd minute.

  • Uwa Elderson Echiejile

    Uwa Elderson Echiejile

More defensive than he would’ve liked, Echiejile ensured that the opposition couldn’t create opportunities down the left. Struggled at times with Bance, the number three improved as the match wore on before falling down to injury.

  • E. Ambrose

    E. Ambrose

A decent final performance from the Celtic player. A constant threat down the flank, he instigated various opportunities for his team-mates. His powerful physique saw him power through the opposition on occasions. A real threat.

  • Godfrey Oboabona

    Godfrey Oboabona

Calm at the back, the Sunshine Stars defender thwarted the Burkinabe attack on occasions as well as limiting Pitroipa as best he could.

  • Kenneth Omeruo

    Kenneth Omeruo

Competent performance from the young ADO Den Haag defender, who excelled alongside his defensive partner Oboabona. Sometimes caught out of position, he kept his balance.

  • John Obi Mikel

John Obi Mikel Top of the Match

Typically sound in a fiercely competitive midfield, the Chelsea star did well to frustrate the Burkinabe. Efficient as he was, his range of passing and awareness of positioning saw him pick off the opposition with ease. A fantastic night from him.

  • Victor Moses
    16

    Victor Moses

The Chelsea star wreaked havoc down the wing with his pace and trickery causing too many problems. Sorely lacking some end product, Moses should’ve added in a second had his decision making not failed him. Nevertheless, it was a productive final from the winger.

  • Ogenyi Onazi
    6

    3.00

    Ogenyi Onazi

Part of a balanced Nigerian midfield who faced no serious problems throughout the match. Onazi linked defence to attack competently, though his tackling sometimes erratic.

  • Sunday Mba

    Sunday Mba

The hero of the hour, Mba’s fabulous finish only was the tip of a very decent performance in the heart of midfield. More advanced than his team-mates, he showed balance and poise to fire past Diakite to hand the Super Eagles the title.

  • B. Ideye

    B. Ideye

Somewhat isolated up front, the Dynamo Kiev striker did better when dropping back to feed the play to the wings. Held up the ball well, but lacking in terms of finishing. Nevertheless, he created a couple of chances too.

  • Uche
    5
    0
    2.50

    Uche

Fared well in the 53 minutes he featured in Johannesburg. Combined play well with his attacking partners, but couldn’t assert his authority, leaving the likes of Moses and Mba to take up the attacking mantle. Subbed in favour of Ahmed Musa.

    Joseph Yobo

The Nigeria captain came on for the last couple of minutes in place of goalscorer Mba.

  • Juwon Oshaniwa

    Juwon Oshaniwa

The young defender came on for the injured Echiejile midway through the second half and did his best to shore up the defence in the minutes that were remaining.

  • Ahmed Firaz Moosa

    2.50

    Ahmed Firaz Moosa

Thrown on the field just after the break, and contributed well. Perhaps should’ve had a goal after some brilliant play, thwarted only by his own footing.

  • Daouda Diakité

    2.50

    Daouda Diakité

Like Enyaema, didn’t have much to do over the course of the evening, but unlike Enyeama, once he was tested, he didn’t fare well. Easily beaten by Mba for the goal but improved late in the game.

  • Baky
    1

    3.00

    Baky

The Lyon defender wasn’t as poor as his defensive team-mates, providing a series of blocks and interceptions to deny Nigeria from going further ahead. Missed a great header to potentially equalise in the first half.

  • P. Koulibaly
    1

    P. Koulibaly Flop of the Match

Defensively erratic, at fault for the Nigerian goal also, the Dinamo Bucharest defender endured a poor match in Johannesburg. His tackling at times was over the top, perhaps overawed by the occasion.

  • M. Panandétiguiri
    1
    0
    2.50

    M. Panandétiguiri

Lacked a bit of quality in leading the Burkinabe counter attack from the back, especially in the second half. Faded a little towards the end.

  • Mohamed Koffi
    1
    0
    2.50

    Mohamed Koffi

Less advanced than he would’ve liked, he couldn’t limit the rampant Moses effectively on his flank. Physical in his play, he was bettered by the Nigerians.

  • D. Koné

    3.00

    D. Koné

At times efficient in midfield, he couldn’t shield his defenders well from the advancing Nigerian attack. Nevertheless, his tough tackling and interceptions were a highlight.

  • Florent Rouamba

    3.00

    Florent Rouamba

Like the rest of his side, just couldn’t replicate the form which saw them sweep into the final. Highlight a fantastic tackle on Onazi, but will be disappointed by his contribution.

  • Charles Kaboré

    3.00

    Charles Kaboré

The Marseille star and Burkinabe captain couldn’t inspire his side to the AFCON title, with his performance in the final average at best. Couldn’t take advantage of the few chances afforded to the visitors.

  • Jonathan Pitroipa
    2
    0
    2.50

    Jonathan Pitroipa

In the side after having a shocking red card rescinded on appeal by CAF, the Rennes star couldn’t cap off a great tournament with a performance in Jo’burg. Limited and kept at arm’s length by an efficient Eagles defence.

  • Aristide Bancé
    3
    0
    2.00

    Aristide Bancé

Frustratingly wasteful up front, the striker – who plies his trade in Germany with Augsburg couldn’t test Enyaema at all, with his efforts, usually clearing the bar. Not good at all, especially in a continental final.

  • Préjuce Niguimbé Nakoulma
    1
    0
    2.50

    Préjuce Niguimbé Nakoulma

Not a good game from the right winger, as he was effectively marked out of the game. Late rally but constantly kept getting called offside, much to the frustration of the team.

Substitutions

  • Wilfried Sanou

    0
    2.50

    Wilfried Sanou

The substitute spurned a fantastic opportunity – the Stallion’s best of the match by seeing his shot palmed away by Enyeama. Only meaningful contribution.

  • M. Dagano
    1
    0
    2.50

    M. Dagano

Thrown on for Koulibaly with six minutes to go – but couldn’t engineer a special comeback.
