Faced with two one-on-one opportunities and could not really be faulted as Barnsley raced into a first-half lead. Troubled by a bobbly pitch on more than one occasion when dealing with a back pass before he was rounded by Dagnall in injury time.
The MK Dons captain looked the most competitive player in white, crunching into tackles and working hard to support the attack on the left flank. Was caught out by Mellis' through ball in the build-up to the second goal, however.
Immediately troubled by Dagnall's pace as he was caught too high up the field when the striker timed a run behind him to notch the first goal. Suffered the same fate when he added a third late on.
Untroubled defensively, he attempted a couple of trademark charges down the right flank but his final product was lacking. Drove a half-chance over the crossbar from 20 yards.
Struggled to get a grip on the game and dictate proceedings as he usually does from central midfield. Moved into a deeper position to deal with the threat of Mellis behind the strikers.
Saw little of the ball in the opening stages and was withdrawn to central midfield as the Dons switched formation. He enjoyed more possession there but lacked passing options in front of him.
Ran willingly but did not exert much influence at all in central midfield before he was substituted at half-time.
Had difficulty coping with the combinations between Mellis and Dagnall early on but grew stronger as the half wore on and was more effective when moved from centre-back to central midfield after the break. Went close with a long-range free kick.
Strode past Kennedy to bring the Dons back into the game with a cool finish but his encouraging second-half display was prematurely ended by what looked like a muscle tweak.
Consistently threatened to advance into dangerous positions by utilising his pace and power but poor touches repeatedly let him down.
Won many aerial duels and provided some useful flick-ons for others to chase. Very nearly levelled the score in the second half but was denied by Steele. An effective display until he was shown a late red card for an elbow.
Brought on so Williams could be shifted forwards from defence, but his pace and enthusiasm made a positive difference to the Dons' attack down the left flank.
Made one routine save from Bowditch in the early stages before he was beaten by the same player in the second half. Preserved his side's lead with a vital save from Smith's header and then palmed a Williams free kick around the post.
Sat in front of the back four and broke up play effectively, providing a platform for the three attacking midfield players in front of him. Withdrawn for Delap in the second half.
Often outjumped by Smith but did not allow any of the striker's flick-ons to drop into dangerous positions. Effectively shepherded Powell wide when the forward built up a head of steam.
Solid enough at left-back while not providing too much in the way of attacking impetus down the flank.
Sometimes tested by the pace of Powell and tripped the forward on the edge of the box as he looked set to run through on goal. His attacking contributions were sporadic but effective, as he slid in the cross from which Harewood doubled Barnsley's lead.
After a comfortable first-half display, he was exposed by Bowditch when caught too high up the field in the second half.
A neat passer of the ball and constantly moving and looking for space. Mellis was Barnsley's main threat but he frequently supplied the playmaker from a deeper position.
MK Dons simply did not pick him up in the early stages and he punished them in devastating fashion, creating the first goal with a chipped through ball before releasing Wiseman to on the right to create the second. Continued to prove a menace in the second half, flashing one volley just wide.
Provided a more physical presence to complement Perkins' ability on the ball before he was substituted with what looked like a serious injury in the second half.
Extremely effective early on, holding the ball up to bring Barnsley's dangerous midfield combinations into play, but MK Dons dealt with him more successfully as the half wore on. Still, he can count his 45 minutes as a success after he scored Barnsley's second goal with a calmly-placed finish. Replaced by Scotland at the break.
Dashed in behind MacKenzie before firing past Martin with his left foot to open the scoring. A real threat in the opening 20 minutes and exploited the Dons' high line late on to add a third.

Brought on to provide a pair of fresh legs in midfield but he might have hoped to help Barnsley cope better with the Dons' aerial threat given his height.
Demonstrated some quick-thinking to link up well with Mellis early in the second half, but found that service quickly dried up. Might have done better at the end of a counterattack late on, but blasted over the bar.
