Warriors FC extended their stay in the AFC Cup with a hard fought 1-0 victory, courtesy of an own goal by Churchill Brothers captain Ravanan Dharmaraj in the second half at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Wednesday night.

The hosts, who were still missing the services of former Japanese international Kazuyuki Toda and midfielder Shimpei Sakurada due to injuries, started with Shukor Zailan and Shi Jia Yi in the centre of the park.

Coach V. Selvaraj kept faith with the partnership of Erwan Gunawan and Mislav Karoglan upfront in a traditional 4-4-2 formation, with their wingers Tatsuro Inui and Ruzaini Zainal actively involved in the build-up whenever they ventured forward.

Within minutes from the kick-off, Shi played a delicate chip over the defence but Erwan’s header from inside the box failed to find the target.

The closest Warriors came to scoring in the first half was in the 23rd minute when Inui unleashed a vicious grounder from a tight angle, but Sandip Nandy had his bottom corner covered as he went down early to save the shot.

The visitors, although playing in a similar formation to their opponents, preferred the more direct route via the middle of the park, with India national team captain Sunil Chhetri playing behind lone striker Henri Antchouet.

Whenever Churchill did breach the Warriors defence, they found themselves frustrated by the heroics of Hassan Sunny in goal.

Four minutes before half-time, Asley Fernandes found space for himself at the edge of the box, but his shot was palmed away for a corner by Hassan.

The deadlock was broken eight minutes after the break when the Warriors went on a swift counter-attack down the right hand side, which caught the Churchill defence by surprise.

Ruzaini made a darting run down the flank before sending a wicked cross across the face of goal. Luck was not on the visitors' side, as Ravanan turned the ball into his own net to give the hosts the lead.

The visitors could have equalized 10 minutes later, but Antchouet was not able to connect with Arezou's cross in the six yards box.

Despite coming under a barrage of attacks from Churchill in the final 10 minutes, the Warriors hung on to the slender lead to clinch maximum points and keep their hopes of progression to the knock-out stages of alive, with two more matches to play.
