MFM forward Jesse Akila hails their win over Akwa United as ‘one of our best performances so far’

A Sikiru Olatunbosun 36th-minute effort was enough to secure maximum points for the Olukoya Boys who curtailed their dominant visitors.

And the former Niger Tornadoes forward believes they dished out their best to defeat the best side in the Nigerian top-flight.

“Actually, this is one our best performances so far looking at the team we played.,” Akila told Goal.

“Akwa United are a big side and on top form as evident in their position on the log and winning against them is a morale-booster for us."

Both sides are representing Nigeria on the continent and prior to the game, endured contrasting fortunes in their opening fixtures.

MFM, in their first ever outing on the continent [Caf Champions League], surprisingly, managed a 1-1 draw against AS Real Bamako in Mali while Abdu Maikaba’s men were handed a shock 2-1 loss by Gambian outfit Banjul Hawks in their Confederation Cup tie at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

But the fast-rising star opines that his side won the tie on merit, not benefitting from their visitors’ slump on the continent.

“I don't think so, their poor performance was on the continent in the Caf Confederation Cup. This is the league where they are topping and I don't think that affected them.”

Akila has been a revelation in MFM's attack this season, dishing out impressive performances and has weighed in with two goals this season.

The forward started from the bench in Friday's league game but will be expected to lead the line in midweek's Champions League fixture against AS Real Bamako.
