VIDEO: New Man Utd signing Lindelof scores beautiful free-kick goal

Centre-backs are supposed to head home free-kicks, not score directly from them, but that is exactly what new Manchester United signing Victor Lindelof did in April.

The Red Devils announced the 22-year-old defender had agreed to join the club from Benfica on Saturday for a reported fee around €35 million.

The expectations will be for Lindelof to step in and help fortify Jose Mourinho’s defence, but his strike in Portugal may give fans loftier dreams.

With his Benfica side down 1-0 to Sporting CP in the April 22 derby, the centre-back stepped up and struck an exquisite shot that left Portugal international goalkeeper Rui Patricio helpless.

Lindelof’s hit on the dead ball may evoke memories of another United great, David Beckham.

Of course, it was the Sweden international’s only goal of the season, so it may be premature to expect the defender to approach Beckham’s heights. Still, United fans can salivate over that level of quality now being available on their backline.
