Nigeria U20 women get $7000 cash gift for successful pre-World Cup tour

Nigeria’s sports minister Solomon Dalung has rewarded the U20 women side following their successful outing in their pre-U20 Women’s World Cup tour in Austria.

The Falconets trounced Austrian women topflight side FC Wacker Innsbruck 4-0 in Tivoli W1 Stadium on Saturday to confirm their readiness for next week’s women youth event in France.

Prior to the encounter, Christopher Danjuma’s ladies defeated a topflight outfit FC Bergheim 3-0 and the sports minister, who was impressed, expressed high hopes in the country’s title-winning chances, while urging the girls to replicate the winning mentality at the age grade championship

“I want to congratulate the team and their coaching crew. I am proud of you girls. Having watched you, I’m convinced that a lot of talents were on display,” Dalung told the players.

“If we are able to manage these talents for the future, we will enjoy them for a long time. My passion for women’s football is high and I don’t like the idea of treating people differently.

“We must develop and invest in women’s football the same way we do for men’s. That gap must be bridged. I want to assure you that we will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that your welfare and that of the coaching crew is taken care of.

"I want to see all these goals re-enacted in France. We will go back and work out your entitlements to ensure that the girls are comfortable in France.”

On Thursday, the Falconets will depart their training tour base in Tirol, Austria for the World Cup in France, where they will begin their campaign against Germany in Group D on August 6.
