Paul Merson has paid an emotional tribute to Ugo Ehiogu following the news of the former Aston Villa star's sudden death.

Ehiogu, who was coach of the Tottenham Under-23 team, passed away on Friday after suffering cardiac arrest while taking training and his untimely demise has sent shockwaves through English football.

Merson, who played with Ehiogu at Villa in the late 1990s, was asked to give viewers an insight into 'the man behind the player' and was visibly distraught as he described the former defender.

"To be fair, I'm still devastated," Merson said on Sky Sports. "I mean, he was such a top bloke, it was unbelievable."

The former England international continued by calling Ehiogu a "man-mountain" before trailing off as he grew increasingly upset.

He added: "You know what? Billy Joel sings a song about it: only the good die young."

Ehiogu won two League Cups, the first with Villa in 1995 and the second with Middlesbrough in 2004.

He earned four caps for England, scoring one goal, which came in a friendly win over Spain in 2001.
