Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that Mario Gotze's metabolic illness will keep him sidelined until next season at the earliest.
In February it was announced that the Germany international, who scored the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final, would be out for an "unspecified period of time" due to a disorder.
The German outfit, who last week qualified for the quarter-finals of the Champions League, have now revealed that the 24-year-old will not be able to feature again this term.
A statement on the club's official website read: "The goal for the player is to be fully prepared to play again at the start of the new season."
BVB note that that they hope the player is back in "performance-orientated training" in the early months of the summer.
Season 2016-17 has proven to be one of the most difficult in the former Bayern Munich man's career. He has spent much of it battling injury and illness, as he has turned out only 16 times for his club, scoring two goals.
