The Uruguayan is now one of three players, alongside Dutch great Ruud van Nistelrooy and opponent Lionel Messi, to have played more than 20 Champions League games and netted in at least 50 per cent of them.

Cavani had the ball fall kindly to him just inside the penalty area to volley home a wonderful finish into the back of the net and make the score 3-1, just as Unai Emery's men were on the ropes.

The strike that gave Les Parisiens back control of the tie means he has now scored in 50 per cent of his appearances in Europe's premier club competition.

The goal also means Cavani has eight goals in the Champions League this term - his highest ever in the competition.
