Bayern should think about selling Thiago - Matthaus

Bayern Munich should consider selling Thiago Alcantara, according to Lothar Matthaus, who feels the midfielder is not playing well enough to deserve a place in the squad.

The midfielder was limited to just 32 games in all competitions in 2017-18, starting just 12 in the Bundesliga as Bayern strolled to another league title.

However, the Spain international was called out in the wake of his side's exit from the Champions League semi-finals at the hands of Real Madrid and courted controversy when he reacted to being substituted in the DFB-Pokal final defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Thiago has spent five years with the Bavarian side since joining from Barcelona, but Matthaus believes Bayern may have to cut their losses with him, especially with Leoon Goretzka coming into the squad in the summer.

"Thiago has not made the difference in the big games so far," the Bayern and Germany legend told SportBild. "I actually like him, but he was a shadow of himself. Thiago has disappointed me in recent weeks.

"I do not know where he is with his head. With these issues, he is not a player for Bayern Munich

"If there is an appropriate offer, you can think about it. Especially since Bayern have Thomas Müller, James Rodríguez and Leon Goretzka for the same position "

Thiago, who has won five Bundesliga crowns at Bayern, is contracted to the club until 2021 and has been been a rumoured target of Real Madrid, Manchester United and Manchester City.
