Away teams should fear Anfield - Liverpool's Joel Matip

Liverpool's frightening run at Anfield should always scare visiting team, says defender Joel Matip.

The defender was preferred to partner Virgil van Dijk from the start in Saturday's 3-0 victory over Southampton, where he was also among the goals.

The win meant Jurgen Klopp's men have suffered defeat only once [FA Cup vs. West Bromwich Albion in January] in their last 34 games in all competitions.

“I think it should always be a fear to come to Anfield as an opposing team,” Matip told BT Sport .

“But we are working hard to make it as uncomfortable as possible for the opponent and we are on a good way. I think nobody enjoys to play here.”

Matip who underwent a thigh operation in April - and after his return suffered a setback during pre-season - was given the nod ahead of Joe Gomez against the Saints.

“After this long time, after this injury, it feels great to start again and to play. It was a nice feeling to be on the field 90 minutes,” he continued.

“Sure, it was quite a long time with the injury but now I’m fit and in a good way. I still need some time but (I’m) looking forward to the next game.

“I was not too lucky with scoring goals during my time at Liverpool but I hope that maybe this season I can score a few more goals.

“It always helps the team and helps me get self-confidence for the game.”

With Gomez and Van Dijk set to continue flourishing as Klopp's first-choice centre-back pairing, Matip still stands a chance to prove his worth with Liverpool heading into a busy 11-day schedule.

They play Chelsea twice, Napoli and Manchester City within that period.
