'Alexis Sanchez wants to get one over Arsenal' - Man Utd star backed by Jones

Alexis Sanchez will be determined to ‘get one over’ former club Arsenal on Sunday, according to Manchester United team-mate Phil Jones.

Sanchez left Arsenal for United in January in a swap deal involving Henrikh Mkhitaryan, with his final few months at the Emirates Stadium characterised by questions over his attitude.

The Chilean is still finding his feet at Old Trafford as, despite a man-of-the-match display in last weekend’s FA Cup semi-final win over Tottenham, he admits he is still adapting to life at United.

But, ahead of facing his old club for the first time since his move, Sanchez has been backed to handle the occasion by Jones.

“I think, if it was away at the Emirates, it might be a bit different,” Jones told MUTV. “Going back to a place where he's very fond of, knows the pitch well and the fans well.

“At home it’s a little bit different but he will still have that added incentive to get one over on them.”

The weekend’s fixture also brings about the last time that Arsene Wenger will manage at Old Trafford as Arsenal boss.

United fans have not always been fond of the Frenchman over the years, famously jeering him when he was sent to the stands in 2009.

Although their rivalry has been heated over the years, Jones has called for the Old Trafford fans to show Wenger the respect he deserves on Sunday.

“He’s been a fantastic manager,” said Jones. “I’ve seen a lot of things in the press at the moment and it’s true. He changed the game of football and the way teams play.

“He’s managed some great Arsenal teams over the years that I’ve grown up watching. He should be respected and get the send-off he deserves.”
