Akwa United set to take part in mid-season tournament

Akwa United will gauge the level of their preparedness for the continuation of the Nigeria Professional Football League season when they take part in a mid-season tournament billed for Uyo between Wednesday and Friday this week.

The mid-season tournament which is organized by the Akwa Ibom Football Association has Akwa United, Ibom Youth FC, Akwa Starlets and Cofine FC as participants and it is aimed at keeping the clubs in shape and busy having just regrouped from World Cup break.

In the draw conducted in Uyo on Sunday Akwa United will trade tackles with National League campaigners, Ibom Youth on Wednesday at the Uyo Township Stadium by 4 pm while Cofine and Akwa Starlets will play the opening match of the tournament by 2 pm at the same venue.

There are four further matches slated for Thursday and Friday and the Promise Keepers are using the tournament to speed up their players match fitness ahead of the continuation of the second round of the league later this month.

The Chairman of the club, Paul Bassey said he is thrilled with the chance to see his players involved in test games ahead of their tie with Kwara United in Ilorin on July 18.

“This tournament has been organized to keep teams in the state that are in the Premier League, National League and the Nationwide League and it is a good opportunity for us to see our team in action before the continuation of the league season,” Bassey told Goal.

“We are not taking any chances at all and we want to have a team that is ready to compete until the end of the season. It is because of this we approve of this tournament because we know that the players and our technical crew we use it to prepare for the remaining matches of the league season.

“It was important that we proceeded on the World Cup break with the result we had. The players have been told that they must not relent and that they need to prepare very well for the game with Kwara United. It is the reason we are taking these friendly matches seriously.”
